Turbo'ing your lancer information

120kw, i would think a bit more than that, and CM5A's are hard to come by.

be around that stock most who have had them are usually dyno'd with more boost and exhuast etc so 130-140kw

Nup, I have one with EVO 6 exhaust, pod, increased to 1.3bar boost and tuned with TME ECU and that's all you get plus while it hauls around corners  it peaks at 190k/mph :problem:
Don't forget a stock EVO VI gets 140KWATW and its a 2L with a TD05 the CM5A only has a TD04.

thanks for the info.. :)

I'll use my spare 390cc injectors from my vr4, one less thing to buy..

btw, not looking for massive hp, just that extra push when needed..

Hey guys i have a stock 1998 lancer, 1.5 engine.
Thinking of going turbo.
What parts f the engine would i need to upgrade to do it? eg injectors blah blah,

Turbo
Turbo manifold
Cooling lines
Modified sump
Dump pipe/exhaust
Fuel pump
Injectors
New ecu or piggyback
Intake piping
Intercooler and piping

Bare minimum

Answer us this:
1) what's your knowledge of cars?
2) can you do this stuff yourself? Or you paying someone?
3) are you on your p plates?
4) what's included in turbo kit you can get?

PROTIP: If you are not willing to do the install yourself good luck finding anyone in SA who is willing to do the work for you!

Didn't STIH8R on here just had a shop in SA turbo his coupe?

No idea, one place was reluctant to do it, told me it would be illegal and that they would have to custom machine all piping and it would be $5000+labor

That actually sounds about right. Said shop you took it to would have to custom make everything. If you take it to a shop that doesn't normally do this sort of stuff and say I want this done then yeah could very well be this amount. Majority of mechanics will not want to touch this sort of job and you have to find one that's experienced in it and willing to do it. But if you take it to a shop that regularly does turbo conversions as their primary business, or you source all the parts and do the homework yourself then you will probably find it can be done a lot cheaper. There is a lot more that goes into a turbo setup than just buying a turbo and manifold and bolting them on.

Also they're right about it being illegal. It's illegal until you take it and get the car engineered for the custom work and then get it re-registered as a turbo.

It would cost the same to do a full engine swap to a turbo engine, may as well just do that.

Possibly. The going rate for a GSR halfcut is about 3.5k to give you everything you'll need for a swap. Budget about another 1500 (that's a very low estimate too) for getting a FWD gear box and modifying it and then replacing anything that needs to be fixed plus other little things like the fuel pump upgrade and you're upto 5k already. Then there's also all the supporting mods you need to do like brakes, suspension, tyres, labour if you're not up to doing the swap yourself, engineering and regoing, etc etc. If you want to go an evo swap you're going to be looking at even more.

I'm not trying to *poo* on any dreams here, just trying to give you a realistic view of the costs involved. Ask Joshy Morris about all the hidden little costs with doing such an engine conversion. It adds up quickly, and you really need to be committed to it to do one. Going down this route is never going to be cheap whichever way you go.

If you're serious about going turbo, contact Hens, he does full turbo kits (yes you're in SA but he could probably send you all the necessary parts). He used to do drive in drive out turbo conversions for 4g15 and 4g93s for the 4-5k. Check out dlusional_image's MR (the old REV70Y lancer), and also SU22TU, for a couple of examples of his turbo conversions

Ive actually gone through the process of turbocharging my last 4g93. My list of goodies I used

Turbonetics gt-k t350 turbocharger
Turbonetics wastegate
tenso intercooler 600x300x76
Solid copper headgasket
Cp pistons
Carrillo conrods
Upgraded valve springs
Microtech lt-10s with x4 igniter module, with hand controller
As new 600cc injectors
Malpassi rising rate fuel pressure reg
Evo 3 clutch, upgraded to 600hp by npc clutches
Upgraded in-tank walbro fuel pump (fitted by apc)
Custom made manifold and dump
Turbosmart bov
Underdrive crank pulley with a/c deletion
3" exhaust system turbo back

The car made ran into a piping issue on final run but at 20psi, it got to 183.7kw atw before it would pop the intercooler pipe off. Once I fixed the pipe it then boosted consistantley to 24psi but never had the chance to get a rerun.

What about the brakes? I read somewhere that in NSW if you want to turbo a lancer, you have to have evo brakes on the back instead of the drums to pass rego. Do you really need evo brakes or can you use proton brakes instead?

doubt it man, know lots of turbo lancers and rages with 4 stud and they're all rego'd

Hey guys,

Sorry to bump an old thread like this, but I am new to lancers and need to work out a couple of things that I can not seem to find anywhere else!

What type of injectors are recommended for the addition of a turbo? I read GSR in some of these posts but wouldn't that be a little overkill? I only plan on pushing 7-10 Psi MAX.

Does anyone have a good source of pin out/ wiring diagrams for the lancers? I have downloaded tonnes but none seem right for my car! (In my case, 96 CE Coupe with stock 4G15 SOHC) Trying to wire in the piggyback is a pain without this :(

Cheers for any help!!

Bj
