Brake Upgrade Information

topgunjames said:
hey mmc, if your brakes are rubbish you'd best upgrade the fronts first since they'd make the real difference, rears are really for "the look" and slightly better braking, but its a good upgrade nonetheless, best of luck with it
Thanks TGJ That's exactly what i was thinking but i happened to see this today and thought id better check it out and grab em whilst i can specially for 70 all up.

Looks for the magnas that have ABS i.e. 1996 onwards, they have the twin calipers

92-96. Newer than 96 and they use 160mm spacing, not 130mm like lancers.

This. It's the TR/S model magnas that can be used.

When I said use the whole trailing arm, take the whole lot from the wreckers and bolt the whole lot in to your car. Everything lines up from car to car. In terms of the rear brakes effectiveness... it's true that the front upgrade is much more worthwhile, if you do just the rear you won't notice a whole lot of difference. I did the twin pot fronts first, and found that the rear drums were locking quite easily under hard braking which isn't particularly ideal for the track (which is what I'm building this car for). When I put the rears in it seems to have eliminated a lot of this.

Thanks man, ill keep an eye out there a crap load of magna at the wreckers i go to so might be something to look into .
Speaking of you car when are we going to see some more updates its the first thread i read when i got into the site and it always kept my interest.

Yeah pretty soon got a few little things done/in the works... just getting the car through rego and insurance at the moment so once thats all done there'll be some updates hopefully.

Oops sorry for bad info i thought it was 96 onwards cause the rebuild kits for the calipers are the same to the evo 3 ones, hence assumed they bolted up aswell, but yeh man try upgrade your rears same time as your front brakes, because the rears are 260mm and the stock front are 236mm so your car may looks disproportioned lol

Question: 2nd Gen Proton rears are bolt up? (specifically Proton Wira/Wija?)

I don't think Wiras are Second Gen, Not sure about second gens, they use the same strut tops as CEs, and share a few other parts, but not sure on lower suspension.

hmmm

theres a full one at my wreckers, dunno if i should grab the rear brakes or not (its a 4g18 if that helps). Inside is leather/woodgrain, and looks cheaply made.

if its 2nd gen it wont be a 4g18, coz im sure they went to a 1.6l campro engine.
And i doubt its a 4g18.
Have a look at thr front strut top hats. If its got 2 bolts then its a 1st gen and the rear end will fit. If itts got 3 bolts then its a 2nd gen.

Anyone know if any of the Magna front knuckles would fit?
The front bolt spacing for the caliper carrier is 160mm allowing Evo Brembo brakes or Evo IV 294mm brake setup

i dont think they do spetz, not without alot of machining
sykryd did magna or evo4 knuckles lots of machine work, and john has looked at sizing for them for his conversion and they are just too big

I think you have answered nearly all of my questions with this ^

which hand brake cable did you use the CE Lancer or the Magna one or something else?

what is the stud pattern for the TR/TS 4x100 or 4x114.3 ?

and is the rear brake setup a Drum disc setup similar to the CH Mivec etc ?

And also what size are the discs 260mm ?

thanks in advance for your help

As far as im aware, the magna rear end does NOT fit in CE lancers, just evo 1-3 , proton's, and FTOs

DOH!!! I got excited for a moment...

That'd be a good an cheap upgrade too! haha :(
Imagine that, brakes designed to stop a 200kg V6 on a 900kg car

Chowetime.

The magna differ a bit, here are some pics.

The pre 94 magnas are very unlikely as the caliper mount brackets are cast into the hub carrier.

Post 94 magnas have a slightly different hole pattern, i believe it may be the same as the Galant HJ + setups, in which case you could elongate the holes. They use a different hub mount, but thats not really important as your after the backing plate.

Used a Proton wira handbrake cable (as CE Lancers dont come with discs)
Magna handbrake cables will be different as they have an integral drum handbrake.

TR/TS magnas are 5x114, same as FTO and EVO.

the rear is a disc only with a screw piston handbrake style caliper.

rears are 260mm.

Hope this helps.

I might have another look at mine as the main difference was between the CH fitting onto the CE was the adaptor plate, brake fluid hose and the handbrake cable (the two last items would be easy to replace)

I am now thinking if I can get an adaptor plate to suit the caliper and fit to the CE swing arm it should fit and work... correct?
