Wheel and Tyre Question/Information Thread

Opinions on tyres needed. I'm getting the above wheels and tyres will be 205/40/17 and I've been offered Highflys 458 ( apparently rate very highly on Choice comparison)@$95 ea and Kumhos KU39@$150 ea. Any one running either of these tyres and care to comment on them or offer another choice? Thanks Jason

Heard good things about HiFly. Bridgestone MY02 is my pick though. Insane street grip

Cheers again Rigby. Getting mixed reviews on Kumho's, but it's hard to judge when mostly they are being compared to Pzeros and more expensive tyres :/

I've had my 215/40R17 KU39's on since February, done 4 motokhana's on them and used them daily and they are still good now. Paid $125 a tyre.
They probably grip too well on the concrete of the wet skid pan, on the road they are also good in the wet.
No complaints front me. I think I'll get another year out of them.

Have fitted heaps of customers cars with kumho Ku 22 and have had them on my cressida for 18 months and they are really good dry, wet and they are super quiet. Have had Adrenalins on the same car a few times and liked them but they are more expensive and have harsher ride. If you want a performance tyre go look at ku36 but be warned they wear quite fast, closest thing to an R spec tyre.

So ended up with these. Should be no time at all before gutter rash :) :/
Thanks for the input everyone :)

Anyone tried the Bridgestone Turanza Serenity plus tire on their lancer? I fitted them to a Toyota Vienta Grande 205 65 15 so about the same size and they were really, really quiet.
Believe Michelin Primacy LC are quiet but around $200, approx. $40 dearer.

Can't remember the last time someone on here fitted tyres for less road noise. We've always gone grip for price, noise is a null factor for us. So you're probably the most informed person on the subject seeing as you've actually fitted a set before.

All I know is my ku39's are quieter than the ku31s that preceded them. They're not too loud for a grippy tyre

Poms have the best idea every tire sold in England has to show a DB rate normal range seems to be 66DB-- 74DB Reading taken outside of car. Why not in Aus:

Probably because our climate dictates that our road surface needs to be rougher/hardier, hence any rating given to a tyre in the UK would jump up when tested in Aus. And if consumers saw that a normal range in the UK was x and that it was 5db higher in Aus it may make them not buy it, etc. Makes it a bit of a null point. And you can't have two tyre noise systems, it would confuse the average dumb consumer.

You could check out the following link: http://www.1010tires.com/ they say they are the "absolute authority on wheels / tires , its overseas but still has relevant info especially the tire comparison guide, lets you input your standard factory tire size or wheel size and any other larger dia or smaller dia tires if your thinking of changing wheels to diffrent widths & diameters& tires (gives you speedo varitions / sidewall height / widths /overall rolling diameter so you can stay inside legal DOT allowable increases up or down.
I've used them for over 15 years for comparisons, heaps info.
I wouldn't worry to much about the UK ratings, roads over in UK are either all ways wet / too salty / or cobblestone so many variances on that alone, its a wonder they can rate anything for overall use, completely different driving conditions to Australia, the USA ratings would be a better comparison to us.

Does anybody know if 17 x 7.5 +44 will fit alright on a CE mirage? Guards are rolled and bumper tabs are gone. 215/40 17 are the tire size I'm thinking. I'm asking as I'm thinking of getting a set of Rota grids and this is the only size they have in 17's, and +44 seems like a weird offset.

I assume your standard mitsubishi mirage wheel size was 13x5.5 running a 175/70 r13 tire, this gives it a rolling diameter of 576mm, standard offset is 46P with a tire diameter section width of 177mm, so the the plus 44P offset of your new 17" wheel you are talking about is only a 2 mm variance from the standard offset of 46p, so no problems so far with offset

The 17"x 7.5 wide rim fitted with a 215/40- 17 inch tire will have a rolling diameter of 604 mm with a tire width of 218 mm

If you use a 205/40 17" tire instead of the 215, you will have a rolling diameter of 596 mm with a tire section width of 212 mm

If you use the 215/40 tires you will be increasing you overall rolling diameter by 22 mm and tire section width by 41 mm, this will result in your speedo showing aprox 105 kph when you are really doing 100 kph.

If you use the 205/40 tires you will be increasing your overall diameter by only 20mm and tire section width by 35mm, this will result in your speedo showing aprox 104 kph when you are really doing 100 kph

So on those above figures the speedo should read about 4-5 kph higher than what you are actually doing (better than reading slower i guess) and the 205/40 should be legal (dia wise only) with the 215/40 are a problem at 41 over standard rolling diameter, but the only worry i see is the section width increase of each of the tires over standard of 41 mm and 35 mm respectively for guard clearance.

Like you said "Guards are rolled and bumper tabs are gone" so yes both should fit, but the 205/40 - 17 will be within legal rolling diameter parameters and may actually be a better fit under the rolled guards as they will be 6mm narrower under your wheel arches than the 215's.

While the "rolling diameter" of the 205/40-17's will be within legal stats, the increase in rim width over standard of 75mm may be a problem, in qld i think its at 12.5 mm over standard track last time i read it years ago.

I don't know what state you are in as they all vary state by state, you will prob never be pulled up if car looks tidy and not to low (less than 100mm lowest contact point to ground), but legally (insurance wise) could be a problem.

How sacked is the mirage? 17x7 with 4x100? Or 5x114 pcd? Make sure it's the right one.

Everything else is covered above.

215/40/17 will be fine. Just more grip but know that your speedo will be out slightly. If you have gps get that going while you hold a stable speed at 60 80 and 100 and see how much you're out by. Adjust your driving accordingly. When the 215/40/17 tyres die, go to 205/40/17.
