POSTPONED: Server Outage

Looking at doing a server cutover most likely next weekend. Basically I have done a test run of the file copy and load testing of the server and believe all will go smooth with less than a 15 minute outage, but then there will be a period for the DNS changes to take effect (ie for the auslancer.com address to change from our current to new IP address). If you use Google's DNS servers then this should be fine (and sort itself out within 15 mins) otherwise it may take upto 24 hours to access the new server. If you want to change your DNS this article tells you how to: http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using.html

As a result of the changes we might get slightly slower page load times but the reliability of the site should improve as we are moving to the Amazon EC2 Cloud hosting...

Re: Server Outage

Will we be able to access the server from the new IP address if we can't access it from the url?

Re: Server Outage

Possibly not sure...depends if I can work out what Apache config will make it work, I might be able to get a different URL/domain premapped across though and use that...

Re: Server Outage

Just provide the new server IP address to everyone through a admin email/fb and that should satisfy everyone until it occurs :).

Re: Server Outage

All depends how the config is mapped out in Apache, with this VPS we have 2 IPs and one is dedicated purely for this forum. On the new server I only have one IP to cover everything hosted on it. So will just depend if I can get Apache to play nice or not....

Re: Server Outage

easier solution would be to open up command prompt and type in: ipconfig /flushdns

Re: Server Outage

That will only solve local DNS caching won't it? The main problem will be that your ISP's DNS servers won't get rid of their DNS details that they've cached from our registrar for upto a day...

Re: Server Outage

Have we got a current ETA/Date when the server will be going down?

Re: Server Outage

Had a set back so will have to wait a month or two...
