Engine conversion 1.8l to 2.0l

  1. Just wondering about a lancer I'm buying. It's a limited edition (don't know if that even means anything) coupe 2001. It has a 2.0l engine in it The body is very straight. It sounds purr amazing . Just not sure of the engine that was put in. It suppose to be a stock 1.8l and he doesn't know what engine has been put in it, So I don't know what it could be (what fluids and oils and such)
  2. Any one have a clue. I will be getting the engine number tomorrow/today

If the engine is a 4g93 - it is the stock 1.8L, if the engine says 4g94 it is a 2L motor from the next series of lancer. Very similar motor, just a little bigger. A nice upgrade if you're planning on staying NA

Naturally aspirated, it means non turbo. Which most do haha. Regardless, if it's got the 2Lt, it'll go a bit better than the normal ones.

It seems to be a common theme that people think the limited run Lancers all came with 2L engines. I'm betting it's the 1.8 because they look almost identical but if it is the 4g94 then good on him for upgrading, and shame on him for not actually knowing what engine is in the car he drives every damn day.

Does the 4g94 engine take the same oil and coolant ?

Same oil and coolant, the amount will be very similar from memory as well.
Visually, the 1.8L called a 4G93, and the 2.0L called the 4g94 are pretty much identical from the outside, especially to the untrained eye. If this car has been sitting for a couple of years, it'd be very unlikely to have been swapped from the original 1.8L to the 2.0L, as that particular engine swap has only done recently (within the last 3 or 4 years). Grabbing the engine number will confirm it within seconds.

Has the owner said why the engine was changed?

Message a mod like donki to change your username.

As said above, engine number will confirm any questions. A pic of the engine bay would help too but obviously as its not in your possession that's a bit hard.

Also in terms of fluids, they're gonna be almost identical. 4g93 is about 3.8L of engine oil inc filter. 4g94 is apparently 3.5L inc filter if someone wants to confirm. Basically the same. I would suggest filling it using your dipstick and not a measuring cup as soon as you pass the 3.5L mark.

It's the engine. It is a 4G94. It runs a little rough. Could it just be from sitting. And I will need to change spark plugs and oil and stuff. Kinda sounds like it has a little hiccup. If I work out how to upload a video with sound I will put it up and get you opinions.
BTW I bought it. Was only $800. I thought it was a good start.

Yeap thats it. Theres a thread on here in the DIY's on how to change it, so you dont break any bolts and such

Give it a basic service, replace all fluids and filters and plugs etc. Clean the MAF sensor if it has one (idk g94 life) and the throttle body. That will eliminate a lot of possible problems and narrow down any issue if there still is one.
