Car stumbles/back fires on instant wide open throttle (sometimes any form of throttle)

Just trying to chase down a little gremlin with my 1.8 swapped ce mirage. Changed out fuel, fuel filter, spark plugs, cleaned out throttle body and air flow sensor but still the problem persists. When I disconnect the plug on the maf it runs fine on its base setting so I'm assuming maybe it's to do with the tune as the battery does go flat from no use every now and then. Anybody have a rundown on how to 're-learn' it's base tune map on the ecu. Car is also unregisterable so driving on the roads is a bit of a drawback. Thanks

Whats the spark plug gap?
The general process to reset the "base tune" is to disconnect the ECU for at least 10minutes (even cycle the key a few times to completely discharge any power). Then connect the battery, and let the car idle without any throttle for at least 16 minutes, as the car "learns" its fueling in 4minute blocks. Four lots of 4minutes is enough to have a cleanish idle block.
You will also need to drive it at a constant speed and with as little throttle as possible (less than 80% at any point) for 16minutes as well to learn the drive fueling. This will be the hard one to do if its unrego'd.

Will have to try that thanks. Probably wouldn't work but if I've got another ce lancer 1.8 that's got rego from roughly the same build date, could I swap the ecu into it from the mirage and do the driving part of the ecu or will disconnecting the battery pretty much wipe it all again. Kinda dumb question now that I look at it but just making sure

You worked it out haha, when the ECU loses power, it wipes the fueling trim measurements (which is the 4x4min driving). This is only one part of diagnosing it though, and it might not be the solution unfortunately
