Airconditioning 2005 ES

Hi everyone,

I bought a 2005 ES Lancer today... just a few little things worrying me at the moment....
From the looks of things I think the car has been in an accident as the front appears to be all new.... for example the radiator and battery and all of the pipes and cabling around the front.... Also for a 6 year old car, no stone chips or anything on the bumper.....The car appears to run fine but there could be some hidden problems that will pop up one day.... gotta look on the brighter side of things that at least I have a new front on the car :)
Anyway the problem/question is about the air conditioning.

Firstly, there are 3 buttons in the centre console.... 1st one is for the rear demister, the second one is the air conditioner and the 3rd is the recirculate button.
Button 1 turns on and off fine with each press, but the second and third button don't appear to work all the time.... I don't know if there is something wrong with the buttons or thats how they are supposed to work.. Sometimes I press them an the light turns on and off, sometimes I press it multiple times and it doesn't come on at all. I was thinking maybe its like that for a reason cause its might not like being turned on and off.. just seems very weird though..

Another thing, which might be normal..I've only driven the car for about 15 mins, but during that time I notice like a clicking noise coming on and off in the engine bay.....
When I got home I poped the bonnet, the click noise happens when the fans turn on.....
Are the fans supposed to keep turning on and off??? It seemed to turn on for 11 seconds and turn off for 9 seconds...it just keeps doing that continuously.... when the airconditioning was off, the fans were just off and didn't come on (the car wasn't running for that long and it was a very cold day if I left it longer I'm sure (I hope) the fan/s would have turned on)
Is this clicking noise normal? Is the on/off thing normal? I read somewhere in another forum that they said this happens in smaller cars... something about giving the engine more power on smaller cars.

I've got 3 months warranty from the dealer on the car so I wanto to try to dig out whatever I can and try to claim it if need be....
Thanks in advance everyone! :)

P.S. Anyone know where I can get a passenger side sunvisor? The mirror is smashed, from the look of things its easier to replace the whole visor rather than just the mirror.

I know with my air con and most of the ones ive noticed, the AC, recirculate light only comes on when the fan is also on.

ie.
fan off, aC off, light off
fan on, ac off light off
fan on ac on light on,
fan off ac on, light off.

Not sure if its that easy fix. The clicking could be a relay that triggers the fans, when the aircon turns on?

I'd actually go check the radiator and all that. Fans would be normal, as they'll turn on and of depending on the temp of the engine etc (they are electronically controlled not belt run)... umm... possible picts of engine bay so i can compare to mine may help as well. And tbh do what I did, take it to a mechanic and just get it shaken down, mention: Ac, fan, cooling, radiator and electrics. Also if there is damage that can be deem unroadworthy then that car should never have been sold to you in that state if its registered.

ok, i know this is how it rolls in NSW, but not sure what state your in
if the vehicle was in an accident, you can call up the RTA and get a revs check done on the vehicle (think they charge $15-$20 per check now) and this will atleast shed some light on if the car was in an accident and what exactly was damaged/replaced
it may/maynot lead to shedding some light into solving some of these issues

Regarding the REVS check, that only normally tells you if the car has been written off ... (A repairable Write off), I don't think it ever tells you the whole history of whether its been in an accident of any sort.... I did all the REVS checks before...

What I really just need to know.... should I be able to push the aircondition button on and off as much as I like and the light should go on and off... or is it normaly for it to not let me turn it off or on for some reason at certain points in time.

Thanks

question: Do you have the fan on in the car, when you press either the recirc or aircon button.... ?

The demister is usually it's own circuit, but those other buttons require power via the fan dial switch...

There are two fans on the radiator.... They both turn on and turn off at the same time.....

If you're talking about the fan dial inside the car, yes its on..... I don't touch that dial (leave it in thesame position) and the recirculate and Air Conditioning buttons intermittently work or don't when when trying to turn them on or off...

my experience with my 03 CG, the three buttons may not be in contact well enough with the switch behind the button. I suggest you to try pulling out your cover and try the switches directly. Those switches can be replaced by an electrician. I sort of quick fixed mine.

I tried the yestersday and they worked every time..... so yeah you could be right, just not making contact well... maybe depends on the whether a bit :)
I'll have a look and see if I can get the covers off...

That clicking noise will be your fan relays, 100% normal, alsonormal for them to come on and off. As the high pressure in your ac system rises the fan will cut in at a certain pressure and will turn back off once its down . Itll come down rather quickly also. Hence why it turns off shortly after starting. With your switches, its hard to say wether it is a switch problem but to double check when u think the buttons not working pull it out and bridge the plug. If your ac comes on then, or whatever one it is, you have yourself a switch issue.

hey shonkster,
I know this thread is over a year old but have you solved your A/C button problem yet?

If not, the button pressing issue is to do with the circuit board behind the A/C controls. I had the same problem (A/C button wasnt working).

Although I could've replaced the entire A/c and fan fascia, I chose to just replace the circuit board (much easier). It works fine after this.

See Skippy's wonderful DIY removal thread for more info: viewtopic.php?f=42&t=1384

Just thought I might share my experience with this issue.

Good luck.

when I swapped out the engine in my CH the air cond was never regassed and as such the a/c light does not light up... check to see if you have gas in your air cond.
Check in the engine bay were the air con compressor is there is a trigger wire there check to see if that is intact and connected...

I would do this before trying to pull the dash out... and maybe check the relay it may not be working correctly

the car has a really good cooling system in it with the radiator fans and thermo fans etc - they do make a loud and sometime annoying clicking and they will remain on when car has been driven and the turned off...
