Decent track car on a budget

Opinions on or have mates who have decent cheap track cars??

I Dont wont stupid answers and understand a cheap track car wont be the best track car. I 'd love to have one some day to play with.

Just looking on 105.com now to get a idea thinking a good base car would be n/a maybe??

bmw 323 318 E30
maybe e36 325
Mazda mx5
Proton GTI

I guess my99 wrx or cc gsr be good base being AWD if going turbo.

I noticed in the irace series there's alot of different cars from integra's, hyundais to 380's but they like whatever it to be stock engine i think.

mx5's are a great little track car but they still go for a fair bit. I'd prob steer clear of a bmw if i were you. You'll prob break something on the track, and it will cost a small fortune to replace it. For NA gti swifts are actually very good track cars, light as anything, cheap and plenty of cheap aftermarket parts. I'd personally like to get a Satria gti for a track car

red mx5 looks sick, great times too. What about something like a turbo r32? You can pick them up real cheap and parts are cheap and plentiful

kill me for saying this but a cheap racing series to get into is the excel cup im actualy tempted to get into it but havent got the income to support the fees etc

Yer the proton was one I thought of being 1.8 but didnt think fwd would be the best but i guess with the right setup doesnt matter too much.

I might have a look on the irace series website get idea on what they have.

Yer I thought that line to 180 silvia r32 I mean there cheap and quick. But are they reliable enough for thrashing and a newbie driving them.. Oil pump problems??

5k on car 5k on everything else to get it rocking.

I dont mind the idea of the excel cup but rather drive something a bit better but yes your right thats the cheapest one to get into i guess..

Mx5 seems to be few under 7k maybe something with a roof incase i flip it :lol:

With a good suspension setup FWD's can handle as well as a rear wheeler or better. Obviously you won't have the same power out of corners as a rear or all wheeler, but theres a lot of benefits to them too. Theres a heapof front wheel drives now in racing over in Europe like in the British touring cars and that

Bmw theory was there cheap as like under 1k so you could buy 2 and have a spare and still only have spent 2k.

proton and mx5 sort of the same price unless I look out for a proton in some damage auctions or something.

Or look out for a cc gsr for round 5k wrx be bit more i guess..

Maybe 1.8 mirage or lancer i guess.

you could get a pretty sweet crx track car with a 1.6L dohc V-tec, or something for 5K easy or id u wanna splurg go the b18c
i seen a few already converted for sale
its not the most powerful but they are cheap + lightish + handle well on acount of short+wide wheel base
they also go pretty low
plus most have had the vtec engine converted into them so they already have aftermarket EMS

i kno if i was building a track car i'd go that or mx-5, i do like mx-5's

There was a mint proton on boost a month or so ago that sold for 6000, only had 60xxxkms on it. I really wanted to get that when I had the golf for sale and spend a few thousand on suspension and leave the engine pretty well standard. Itd be nice and reliable and handle like its on rails

hmmmm I guess it depends on what I want to be in and what I attend.

Just looking at the time attack website and have few classes awd turbos, rwd force induction or na or v8's.
Notice in the points board theres na silvia so guess i could always go a na silvia 180.

Not sure if there is any rulings on engine work for time attack like the i race series.

NA power to kerb weight.

Proton gti =103kw 1130
Mirage = 69kw 955
Lancer 1.8 = 86kw 1010
Excel = 74kw 925
Mx5 1.8 = 98 kw 980
1.6 = 85kw 958
siliva 2.0 = 119kw 1200?
1.8 = 97kw 1200?

Guessing 180's be around same power not sure if weight the same though...

Any other N/a cheap cars??

When I went to Wakefield there was an MX-5 there. At the time I had Kings springs and heavy assed 19s screechin through every corner. Was talking afterwards to the guy with the MX5 and he was saying he could gain a lil bit on me through the corners, but in between the corners I was pulling away from him. Find it hard to believe given the CJ 2L is 1.4T and 113kW, unless he just couldnt drive for *poo* :? (Mind you i was only on my greens at the time and only had the CJ for 6 months, hardly an experienced driver!)

Would love to go back to Wakefield again, no more SRI, coilovers and better wheels and tyres I should blitz it compared to before. Just need some fatter sway bars now.... One thing Wakefield did make me realise is if you can get your handling down pat then really that's more worthwhile than small gains on the engine in reality....

mx5's ive heard are very good on a track, being short, light, low and RWD

My mates got an MX5, his is FWD...

im pretty sure all mx5's are rear wheel, i havent seen a single one to this day that is front wheel

Interesting to know Ryan do you know if it was a 1.6 or 1.8??

Going off some of the weights on the cars I put up on the other page the proton and others I should be able to strip alot out of them to a mx-5 so hopefully get them down to a tonne.
