Hi all, really hoping you have some wisdom for me on this one
Here’s the rub - My ‘07 4g69 had a leaky head gasket. I’ve pulled the head off and got it checked out and all is well, no cracks etc. The guys also gave it a good once over and got valves reseated etc.
Since the head was coming off, I’ve replaced timing belts and water pump, manifold gaskets etc too.
Putting it all back together went ok, followed the manual, all marks lined up, tension on belt good after spinning by hand, didn’t lock up or anything etc.
Fired it up and it made a loud racket. Apparently the valve clearances hadn’t been set, so I went through and did that also (inlet and exhaust cam bolts were checked prior to head going in). Fired Up again and definitely better but still noisey.
Interestingly, the noise got a lot better (possibly normal) when given some revs but not flogging it.
Pulled covers off and rechecked timing, marks all still lining up. Went over all the timing belt setup including double checking the balance shaft that runs off the main timing belt - all good, marks line up after hand cranking.
BUT, there is a clicking kind of noise when cylinder 1/4 almost reaches TDC - every turn of the crank. Sometimes also makes same noise a bit after TDC. Not keen to run engine again without some idea of what’s going on, don’t want to wreck it or anything.
So my question is, any ideas what might be making the noise? Is it just that oil hasn’t got through the VVT system maybe? Is there a proper procedure to get the VVT running properly?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, thanks heaps
