1996 CH 1.8ltr stock.

Howdy all. New user so go easy. I've got a Nov 96 CH with a 1.8ltr engine. All stock. 370,000km. Its my daily drive to work. Anyway it has developed pinging when the engine gets warm. I've checked the valves and adjusted correctly, changed the plugs and set the gap. Still pinging. Whilst doing the plugs and valve gaps I checked the timing and found that it was firing at approx 5deg after TDC at idle and at approx 1500rpm it was firing at approx 5deg BTDC. Timing sensor looks to be on the cam.
I haven't removed No 1 plug and measured TDC compared to the timing mark on the harmonic balancer. Just run standard fuel. Uses abit of oil. Shes no concourse car, she's fairly rough to look at. Just good to dodge roo's on the way to and from work. Just want to keep the old girl going.
Any help would be appreciated

Knock knock that’s the question? Usually happens when engine is warmed up, going uphill or acceleration.
If you have a late 96 1.8 lt, it’s a CE not a CH model, knocking can be caused by many things, but more than likely it is secondary source of ignition, by that I mean it’s prob being caused by carbon build up on piston and around valves on your cyl head, I see you have 370,000 klms so chances are after those klms you would have decent build up if heads never come off.
Can also be caused by
  • Faulty (EGR) Valve, get it checked
  • Ign timing, if you retard it might or might not help, prob use more fuel and still have prob, 5 degrees bedchamber is fine, check at idle around 700 to 800rpm should be near enough
  • Knock Sensor Failure
  • Excessive Carbon Buildup like I mentioned above caused by carbon build up .
  • A vacumn leak somewhere in intake system, prob need to do a smoke test unless it’s obvious that you can see?
  • Higher That Normal Compression
  • Exhaust Back Pressure, again build up deposits in your ex system
  • Substandard Fuel, I’ve always run 98 and 95 octane feul since I bought my Lancers back in 2004, have never needed to clean injectors as they have additives for avoiding and cleaning carbon deposits and keeping injectors clean.
  • Fuel has been a problem ever since they removed lead from our petrol in 2002, causing knocking in older cars as the old super fuel had a rating from memory of about 104 or 105, now we have dropped down to 91,95 and 98.
  • Excessive Engine Temperatures if your engine gets or runs too hot
I see you have checked the other areas, my moneys on carbon build up on head if it hasn’t been removed for a while, and using low octane 91 fuel. You will need to try a good quality carbon cleaner that may work? It could backfire as I’ve seen few high klm engines run worse after treatment as the carbon was the only thing putting that bit extra pressur3 on the piston rings, just saying it’s prob not going to be a magic wand unless your problem isn’t carbon build up related.

Thanks Wagon Master. I rechecked the timing and found a rooky mistake. There is a dial on the rear of my timing light that had been moved. So it was reading the incorrect value. Adjusted it back to zero and bingo. She's correctly timed again. I have increase the viscosity of the oil from 15w40 to 20w50. See how this goes for a while and then look at head removal if I'm feeling bored.
Once again thanks for the replay.
