4g69 gearset modifications

Hi all, as i’m sure majority of manual 4g69 owners are aware sitting at 3000rpms while cruising on the highway is annoying asf. So i want to ask if anyone has changed the gear ratios/Final drive on the 4g69’s F5M42 gearbox by using gears/diff crown wheels from other mitsubishi gearboxes?

I currently have the gearset and diff from a 4g93 lancer and i noticed the 1st and 5th gear ratios and final drive looks like it should’ve been in the 4g69’s gearbox.

4g69 gear ratio
1st: 3.583
2nd: 1.947
3rd: 1.379
4th: 1.030
5th: 0.820
Final drive: 4.058

4g93 gear ratio
1st: 3.071
2nd: 1.947
3rd: 1.379
4th: 1.030
5th: 0.767
Final drive: 3.722

Now this to me looks like the 4g93’s 1st and 5th gear should’ve been in the 4g69, because 1st gear feels like its wayyy too short and 5th gear revs the engine at 3000rpm while sitting at 100km/h.

Has anyone changed their 4g69 gear ratios? I’m worried i may lose a fair bit of acceleration by swapping the 93’s gearset and diff into my 4g69 gearbox.

You might be able to swap just the desired gears over? Depends on the shaft size. Grab a spare 69 box and start digging man!

I looked into this extensively and one thing thats important to note is that the gear sizes listed in haynes manuals ect are not accurate. Theyre close but not gospel.

I went for a deep dive; my purpose was to fit a 4.2 or 4.6 final drive but swap the first gear for a short second and a longer 5th. Couldnt really find any suitable gears in this application. There was sets that existed but they only made 10-15% difference MAX. 200-300 rpm wasnt worth the effort to dollar input for me. There are LOTS of gearsets for these boxes

F5M41 F5M42 are the two boxes you’re interested in.

Trust me when I say it goes deeper than you think.

Be sure to run the numbers through a calculator before you spend big money. Include the final drive and your wheels too. The wheels and tyre choice have a bigger effect for the least amount of $$

I haven’t really spent any money so far, i got the manual 93 box for free, and everything looks to be in good condition. The only thing i want to buy for it is a quaife LSDIMG_8174.jpegIMG_8173.jpeg

Also want to note my current wheels are 215/45/17 and i don’t plan to change that. I’m pretty keen on doing a 93 gearset and final drive swap when i put the quaife lsd in my 69 box. If for whatever reason the 93 gears don’t fit into my gearbox i’ll just run the 69 gears with the LSD
