CH 4G69 Crackle/ Burble

Recently bought a CH Lancer that has a crackle/ burble in the exhaust - I was told this is common for them, but surely a modification has been done for this to happen? Would like to stop it and just get a different exhaust system with a meatier sound to it without the crackle/ burble. I like the sound of it on accel, but on decel it sounds absurd. Can anyone offer input? I thought it must have been something tuned in - ie altered timing etc.

This can be caused by several different factors, obviously your exhaust has been modified from standard, can you tell which components have been changed, diameter or has the whole system been replaced?
Usually a audible crack or pop when exhaust valves open/close, this is then made worse by removing changing exhaust components .
More likely causes are
  1. The engine doesn’t have enough oxygen to combust properly, which can lead to a misfire of some cylinders in your engine. This will create popping noises when you step on the gas pedal because these cylinders are not firing together with other cylinders at the same time like they’re supposed to do.
  2. I gather your engine isn’t pinging, so rule out too much fuel.
  3. Your car might have a vacuum leak, can cause pop/crackle when you release the gas pedal suddenly after driving for a while. When there’s less air pressure inside of an engine, it allows more outside atmospheric pressure to rush in to fill the vacuum, which creates a popping or crackling noise, rather then racing and changing the whole system.
  4. You might also be experiencing a problem with your muffler, which could lead to cracking or popping noise.
  5. Steam or water in your system, from cooling condensed moisture.
It might be easier to work out what has been changed first with your system, might be a simple fix like changing resonator, rather then racing out and getting a new system

After the change of muffler I'm now getting a crackle after revving high and dropping off the throttle. Or at least really noticing it now. My understanding was that it is the fuel air mixture igniting in the outlet manifold. Maybe the free-er airflow in the system has allowed the mixture to get further out of the system/changed the timing?

Mine does that as well since i did my exhaust. I've left it as is as I love how it sounds lol pops a bit too. Haven't even got it tuned yet. Sometimes it'll pop going up a gear eg 2nd to 3rd

So just the rear muffler and this is happening?

I’d inspect both your cat’s, meaning remove them both and look at the honeycomb for defects ect. You’ll need a torch to see inside, maybe post the pictures of inside them here if you are unsure about what they should look like.

You could have a small air leak or even a dud 02 sensor, but the cats is where I’d start, as inspecting things is free and the tools for furtther diag are expensive.
