1998 Lancer CE GLI (Coupe) ECU

I am currently working on a 1998 Lancer CE GLI (Coupe). The ECU or ECM needs to be replaced; the car has installed an ECU model MD 336612 to manage the engine 4G15.

I may be finding difficult to find an exact same model in the used car parts market, so I am thinking in some kind of upgrading it. I think it will be nice if anyone with experience with ECUs in this forum could give some opinion on what other model could be installed in this car from other cars of the same period/years like Mirage, Lancers, Colt, Evo, etc with the same engine 4G15. This car is from 1998, up to what year model of the mentioned cars a replacement ECU could be installed? I would assume that later models should have better engine management program in the ECUs.

My idea is to know various models from the above cars with an ECU that could manage this engine (4G15) and I also would like to find an ECU that has the same connections (4 of them) and taking signals from the same sensors currently installed in the car.

At this moment, I wouldn’t like to work with the wiring and connecting new connectors to install a different ECU model. I just would like to find an ECU with same dimensions so I could install it in the same bracket/connection.

Thanks to everyone for inputs with this.

Hey mate,

Within Australia, the emission and vehicle laws changed only very slightly between the 90s and the 2000s, and when Mitsubishi developed the ECU for the CE in the early 90s, (and most of their other cars within the 90s and 2000s), they future proofed themselves. As such, there is very very little difference between an early model CE and a late model CE. Fuel consumption is essentially the same, emission output is very similar, but the ECU itself all runs almost exactly the same programming and management options.
You could go with an aftermarket standalone ECU, but these will cost up of $1k, plus need around $700+ for a tune to end up around the same place as you started at, albeit with more options for tuning of the car (for example, you might have additional air temperature sensor for more accurate fueling or additional barometric pressure sensors if you want to fine tune how the car runs if you regularly drive from sealevel to 2000mtr).

Hi donki,

Thanks for your answer and opinion on the ECUs over the years. Based on your comments, if I just focus on finding an ECU from Lancer CEs, I should be find and not expecting any changes on the pins connections and tasks/operations they do with the engine combustion management, am I right? As I said, I just want to search and find one ECU for just a swap and expecting the engine to start and being able to drive the car, this could be in no optimal tuning, but able to drive the car. Once I have the car running, I could think in making a proper tuning.

I have seen an ad: ECU for a Mirage (2003 I think). Could I try this ECU? Will this give some challenges to swap it and will I achieve what I intend with replacing the ECU: no pins connections problem, engine start, I can drive the car and the only thing left will be a proper tuning.

FYI: At the moment, I do not have access to car repair and service manuals (including wiring diagrams), I lost a HDD with plenty of information about a week ago. So, I do not have information on wiring diagrams from either ECU (Lancer CE or Mirage) to see if there any difference.

Hi donki,
Are the ECus interchangeable between Mirages and Lancer CEs, do you know this?
Are there any pins changes between them? I mean by this, same pin doing something different on each ECU and sending me to find the answer to the problem and proper connection?
I hope you understand me.
Thanks for your time and answer.
