Now going under the logic that I still know nothing (virtually) about the engine under my bonnet apart from the fact it goes choo choo and makes my giddy.
There are few things that Id like clarification on regarding timing belt and what parts are required for a 100,000km swap (or later i guess) and whats not as required (as this can be an expensive maintenance job being quoted upwards of $4k)

Meek sell timing belt kits, but is this everything you need?

Genuine Timing Belt Kit - EVO4-9
The kit includes:
- 2 x Genuine Timing Belts (Main & Balancer)
- 3 x Genuine Timing Belt Pulleys
- 5 x Genuine High-Temp Seals

Is it worth doing the following or are they not required? Im not too sure what parts degrade over that 100,000km period and what parts generally hold up fine.

Genuine Tensioner, Alternator Drive Belt EVO4-6

Genuine Timing Belt Bearings (Idler, Main, Balancer belt) - EVO4-6

Genuine Timing Belt Tensioner to suit EVO4-6.

Naturally all fuilds and gaskets should be changed but what else?
A friend just picked up a E6 and its at the 114k mark with no service history so he's in the process of the 100,000km service and turned to me as the 'expert' ahahahahha, noob.
May seem like a silly question to you mechanical folk, but im trying to expand my knowledge on all this

If it was my car i would do it all

That timing belt kit looks to include the timing belt bearings that you can buy seperate

Defiantly do the timing belt tensioner

and the drive belt tensioner would be good piece of mind but not always necessary

:)

Bloody hell, all starts to add up.
Thanks Foamy, bit annoying the 'kit' is only 1/3 of what you need for the swap.
Glad this is something that only needs to be done once in a blue moon, better to do it right the first time I guess

yeah definitely glad thats not a regular service haha

but yeah you would get away with that timing belt kit and a timing belt tensoner

All that timing stuff (belt, tensioners, pulleys and seals), plus water pump and gasket is a standard timing belt service when added to a regular service (fluids, spark plugs, filters).

If you don't know when your fuel.filter and pump were last replaced, do them too. Might also want them to flush the box and reseal it. Or take it to a transmission place and get them to give it a once over.

Try and find a gates kit for the timing belt service, cheaper but still the same quality.

Our mechanic uses them on all the evo's he works on, including an insanely quick E7 race car she goes with to every track meet.

iv heard the gates belts are only good up to 300HP, any truth behind that?

Please get a new hydraulic timing belt tensioner for my peace of mind. Mine failed this week. Teeth were skipped

Gates timing belt kit with a hydraulic tensioner. Quality made in Japan water pump as well. Do the job right and it will last. I would be looking for some other quotes though!!!
