Hi all!

Nice to meet you, I'm Conor.

Just bought a 2003 GLI Coupe, 1.8L. It's my second car and has done 200,100kms. I'm looking forward to doing 'er up a bit and seeing how she does!

I'm looking for a starting point--the car doesn't have a service history but has had all the essential stuff done to it for the past 10 yrs. I knew the previous two owners and they both took it to a trustworthy mechanic.

What are some things to look at, check, etc. I am fairly handy with a ratchet :p

I can hear a squeak coming from the serpentine belt-- is this easy to service? Which pulley is usually the first to go?

What should I watch out for? Are these cars ok with aftermarket servicing parts, or should I buy OEM? Where can I find aftermarket mods and parts?

Literally anything you guys can think of, please let me know!

Looking forward to chatting more.

Cheers guys.

has the timing kit been done? if not get the whole kit done (not just the belt) and water pump while you're at it. i have a 2003 coupe of similar kms too.

Has not been done, I will definitely be doing this soon. Should I use OEM parts or just get a kit from an auto parts store?

Also how do I tell if it's a 116 or 121 tooth belt?

Howdy!

Belt you can opt for whatever brand but get genuine or koyo branded tensioners. Had several dayco and gates tensioners fail after short use.

The belt will be to suit the CE injected 4g93. The other belt is for a carbureted 4g93 - parts store will clear this up for you.

Throw a new set of belts on, id bet theyre old. You can try tensioning them first. The idler pulleys are typically not the cause of your noise, they hum/drum when the fail rather than squealing.

Oooh very helpful info, thank you so much. Out of interest do you have a specific place you usually get parts from, or do you just get them from wherever as long as it's a reputable seller?

Bursons, repco, supercheap, genuine dealer. Anyone can sell you the right parts, make sure you’re happy with the service you get from the store you’re dealing with though .
