Introduction - 4g15 Nugget upgrading to 4g93 SOHC Turbo

Hi All,

I'm brand new to the forums and Lancer scene so wanted to introduce myself and also ask a couple of questions.

We have a little 1.5lt Gli CE Lancer Coupe that we race in the Nugget Nationals here in Victoria... But as much fun as we've been having we've decided to do a power upgrade. We are doing an engine swap to a 4g93 SOHC and adding a Turbo. The doing of which has me having a few questions I'd like to ask the gurus. I've had a look through the forums and found some answers but I still have some unanswered. I'm sure they are out there but I thought I'd ask and give my headache a rest... lol ... Fuel injection and turbo's are new to me so any help I can get will be appreciated...

My understanding is the 4g93 along with attached gearbox will physically swap straight in to replace the 4g15...

Q1 - Can I use the same wiring loom or will I need to swap that as well? I'm assuming I will need to swap ECU's.
Q2 - Injectors... I'm reading bigger is better, is this true? I'm assuming I don't just go and find the biggest option that will fit and run with that? Surly there is an optimal size? Any recommendations for brands, models, part numbers?
Q3 - Intercooler... Easiest fitting and cost effective options to fit a CE Lancer?
Q4 - Down the track I'm thinking we'll upgrade to an aftermarket computer. My understanding is I should find someone to do the tuning and then go with their recommendation as they will tune best with what they know... Am I correct in that thinking? And can anyone recommend anyone in Melb {Ideally the Sth East} for tuning?

Thanks again in advance for any help you can give me... Bruce.

Welcome Bruce, the engine gearbox package will bolt into the car with the mounts from the 4g93.
The wiring loom, the ECU, the key reader and security module needs to be swapped with the new engine. The driveshafts used are the 4g93 items. People are able to tune the plastic case ECU (donki). Standard injectors will work best with no tuning. Bigger injectors will not work without tuning.

Welcome to the forums Bruce.

Frosty pretty much covered it, but I’ll add my 2c anyway.

Q1 - Get the engine and box complete with wiring harness. Grab the keys, ecu and immobilizer. Otherwise if you have a guy, get them to flash the ECU and disable the key security in the ECU, then just use your original key set.

Q2 - As Frosty said, no need to worry about that stock ones will do the job. Unless you pull the motor down, build it up and add a ginormous turbo trying to make north of 250kw, not needed.

Q3 - Intercooler, grab from from an Evo8-9. They fit well and don’t require you to hack the *poo* out of your front bumper. You’ll just need to make a few brackets to mount it.

Q4 - Maybe hit up Donki, he’s all over the Melbourne tuning stuff.

Another thing to look at later on, or sooner if your keen and have cash to splash, consider an LSD for the box. I don’t have one myself, but people rave about them. The one thing I wish I had of done by now.

Also look at getting a good quality slim line thermo fan, you’ll likely lose the factory ones once the turbo goes on.
And also again, you can get some good cast turbo manifolds on eBay.
I’ve got a Kinugawa one on my car: http://shopping.kinugawaturbo.com/t...shi4g924g93lancersohcdohcgsr18tt25flange.aspx
I believe MAMBA do one too that’s also quite good, might even come out of the same factory. Not sure though.

Anyhow. Good luck, keep us updated.

Thank you Frosty, great information. I really appreciate it

And thank you Arc, exactly what I was looking for as well. I'll try Donki and see what he suggests and yes an LSD is on the list of "look into's" as well.

I have Fabricators Warehouse in NSW making me a steam pipe manifold. Spending a bit more than I intended but that happens sometimes (or a lot more often than it should... lol...)

I have always played with V8's in the past and have a Torana that has more punch than it really needs so when I started down this nugget road I wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much as I am... but this little underpowered Lancer is just so much fun to drive I love it. It deserves this upgrade... lol...

Hey mate, welcome!
I didnt realise they relaxed the rules for engines and turbos for Nug Nats? Anyways,

Q2) id personally grab larger injectors than the stock ones, if youre going the turbo route. Magna orange injectors are 30% larger, so should cover absolute basics, but id you can grab a set of pink WRX STi injectors (575cc), or the navy blue WRX injectors (565cc), as these are plug and play, and have well known figures for the tuning.

Q4) I thinkkk Chasers is Sth East based, i think they used to have two workshops, but i dont know where they moved after footscray. Theyve tuned a couple 4g93's before (and Evos, which is essentially the same). Factory ECU can be tuned with Evo parameters, but any aftermarket ECU can be finer tuned for it. More money, but easier effort. Generally stick with what the tuner prefers.

Hi Donki,

Thanks for the information, really appreciated.

They haven't relaxed the Nugget rules, the do run Non-Nuggets if there is room on the day and have started running a second day at the events for Non-Nuggets. I'm doing the power upgrade partly because I can still enjoy the Nuggets events but I also want to enter other events like Sprints and Hill Climbs and not be limited by the 1.5it engine.

I have another couple of questions...

First... 'm trying to remove the dash from a parts car but can't for the life of me work out how. Feels like it's still attached along the firewall but I can't see where?

And secondly... Is there a larger brake boaster that will bolt straight in? I've upgraded to larger discs up front and discs in the rear and thinking a larger boaster would be a good idea.

Thanks again,
Bruce

Booster from an FTO or EVO will bolt right up. It’s not a necessity at all.

Same deal with the master cylinders - their size is written on them I think the largest is 1” or maybe one size up from there.

You will feel a difference with an upgraded booster and or master, but you don’t need either. Have a good drive of the brake upgrade as is and see if you’re comfortable with how it feels.

As someone who’s been driving with 276mm twin-piston brakes for a year now, with a standard 7/8” master cylinder, I would highly recommend doing a 1” upgrade or AT LEAST 15/16” from FTO. My brake pedal is insanely spongey and the first 50% of pedal travel does literally nothing.

Thank you mate, I really appreciate the help. They feel fine and not spongy was considering as an option with the power upgrade. Thanks
