CG Manual Gearbox issues

Looking to see if anyone else has had issues with a CG 4g94 manual gearbox.

Ive got mine in at the shop right now and the mechanic seems to think the gearbox has had it. It has a bit of a noise from the gearbox/clutch whenever the clutch isnt engaged, having said that all gear changes are perfect and have no issues there at all.

I originally thought it was likely to be the throw out bearing making the noise where engaging the clutch pulls it up hard stopping the noise (especially given that gear changes are all good), but the mechanic is adamant it is the box. The car is in for a clutch kit and slave (internal), not sure whether to replace the box or get him to go ahead with the clutch kit and hope for the best.

Has anyone else had a similar issue?

Cheers

I have never heard of any major dramas with one, as long as you change the oil every 60 to 80k should be good. If it’s a throw out bearing you will hear a noise some of the time, with increase when clutch engaged, depending on extent of wear.
If it’s an internal issue I imagine you would hear it whine while driving, like say shaft bearing. If it drives ok and gear changes are smooth you are right in questioning it, an inspection of throw out bearing should reveal something.
As to whether to replace gearbox or not, if work is already started by mechanic then it’s a bit late for second opinion.
Mechanical noises can sometimes be hard to pinpoint exact location as sound can radiate away from source.
At this point not much you can do if work started, so I guess your decision.

Parts of the gearbox internals spin with the engine speed. When you put your foot on the clutch the gearbox internals stop spinning. A throw out bearing will if adjusted correctly only spin when your foot is on the clutch.
Your noise is most likely a bearing on the main shaft in the box. The cheapest option would be a gearbox from the wreckers.

Hey mate, if your mechanic is adamant that the box is faulty, then you’ll need a new one. Can get second hand for around the $250 mark with no dramas. One from a 1.8 or 2l will work.

are you able to post up a picture of this internal slave cylinder? I havent seen one on a 2l before
