Blow Off Valves

recirculated ones are much better than venting to atmosphere as they keep the turbo spinning faster, meaning less turbo lag. ?

not really, the reason recirc is better then VTA only applies to MAF sensor based ecu's as the ecu knows how much air is meant to be recirculated and adjust fuel to suit, so when the air doesnt get recirculated, the ecu still think the air is there so the AFR runs rich, when causes bad fuel economy and stalling.

if you have a MAP based ecu, you can VTA all day

This is for my personal benefit, but I'm sure some others would like to know... I'm turboing my car, I've currently got a MAF, if I upgrade to a stand alone ECU do I still need the MAF? And I'll be able to successfully run a VTA BOV? (I like the wank factor)

it depends what ecu you choose and whether you car is manual or auto.

for you personally Skip, having a manual, you're in a better position. you might be able to ditch the MAF with a good standalone ecu(vipec, adaptronic, haltech etc). if you do this and use a MAP sensor, you can run vta or recirc as technically, the ecu will choose the fuel levels based on manifold pressure. if you set you piping up well you might be able to switch between VTA and recirc quite easily...or get an adjustable bov

I think with a standalone you get rid of your MAF/AFM and use MAP inputs (normally 1,2,3 bar etc) the lowest bar that you can have for your application is best cuz interpolations of ratios is much more accurate and tuneable. I think recirculating BOV have the same effect as VTA on AFR as the recirc is also going to the atmosphere essentially....and if its MAP based this should be negligible - running rich very briefly.

running no blow off valve causes more lag too because it fks the momentum of the turbine

From the research i have done this is the only reason for them, to stop lag between gear changers. The noise is just extra but the do the same job if they don't make the noise.

good plan. should see if you can get a vipec to suit. or an adaptronic. both are very good ecu's.

Skip I can point you in the direction of a Haltech E8 ready for a four banger and comes with loom and all the different maps for 5 hunjee

I was under the impression that Haltech wasn't as good for some reason... I'm probs going to hit up RPW for the tune/ecu has they specialize in mitsu, otherwise there is a tuning/performance center down the road, though it's usually full of commonwhores.

Haltech are 1 of the best ECUs out there, Adaptronic or Vipec were actually designed by a former Haltech employee as far as i know lol

apparently the head electrical engineers from motec and haltech left each of those companies and joined forces to creat vipec. also i hav heard from ecu guys, that they are ones of the best ecu's to tune as far as language and increment points go

Yes Vipecs are good and easy to tune but a few tuners wont touch them as yet, until they get familiarized with the settings

The best thing about them is the PLUG IN ecus :) very clever

Maybe this thread should be renamed again... :p

I guess I'll have a talk to whoever tunes my car for the options I have. I'd like to be able to change boost at ease and VTA and recirc bov's etc... Just the flexibility to change settings without getting a retune, maybe seperate maps?

most ecus these days have a caouple inbuilt maps, so you'll be right

I just keep my 10" laptop in the car so i can suss out the data and change maps if i need to

I might buy a macbook air for it then :p Sigh January is the goal, fingers crossed, even if I go CM5A  Thanks for the help guys.
