Hello all

I am looking into getting a spare bumper and fender to paint.
Would anyone have advice, tips for painting. Like sanding and preparing as well
I do have a 40l 2.5hp compressor which might do but I am not to sure
I want to color match it and clear coat.
Where would i get the paint mix and clear coat
Any help would be great

Thank you

With painting, the better the prep job, the better the end result.
Ive always used the premix cans from repco/autobarn/super cheap, and try to keep the brands of the wax & grease, primer, paint, and clear coat the same, or at the very least, the primer, colour and clear the same. Mixing and matching runs the risk of the chemicals reacting with each other.

I tend to sand with 600 grit, 800, and then 1000, dry, and then wet&dry sandpaper. Wax & grease the area, let it dry properly, and then use primer+filler.
Let that dry, and sand again with 1000. Wax & grease again, let it dry, and then i use paint. A light dusting first of all so the paint adheres to the primer, and then a covering coat that attaches to the dusting coat. Let that dry. Another coat of paint, let that dry, and then a final coat of paint. Let that dry, and then time for clear.

I do the same process - a dusting coat of clear, let that semi-dry, and then a thicker coat. Let that dry, and then as thick a coat as i can get without the clear running. Some people will like to sand between clear coats, i tend to leave it as is as the result is generally good enough. You can use like 2000 or 3000 grit, or a good cutting compound and finally a polish and wax.

@rigby is a good bloke to weigh in on this

Thank you. This does help. Could I do it with cans or not really worth it?
I don’t want to pay for someone to do it and I feel like it might be worth learning how to paint and big things up

I've done a front bar in two cans of colour before. It wasnt a thick job, but it was enough to change the colour.

Cans it is then.
With the bumper do I need to sand it. Prime it then use plastic adhesion spray?
Does it matter what temp I paint the bumper? Or is it the same way I would metal (fender)?

Sand everything to remove all the raised nastys. I've never used plastic adhesion spray, just normal primer-filler in an aerosol can. Painting is paint. Humidity and temp will play a part, read the cans to see whats best.

It is much easier if youre painting a few items to use a compressor though, but im not around how they work

Plastic adhesion spray is used to before primer to allow the primer/paint to stick to an otherwise not so stickable surface like plastic can be
