ES Wheel Size Recommendations

I'm sure it's been asked to death but I'm too lazy to search. What bigger wheel size can anyone recommend for a 2006 ES? I'm currently using the stock 195 / 55 R15 and the speedo overreads by around 4%

The VRX has a 195/55R16, this obviously fits in the wheel arches no problem. The circumference is 1950mm, so you need to try and find a tyre size to match this to keep your Speedo roughly the same. Up to about +/- 2.5% is okay.

What's your goal, are you looking for a wider rim/tyre combo or a larger rim diameter for looks? With that info I can help you a bit more

17x8 +40ish and something like a 215/45/17 tyre or 17x7 +40ish with about the same tyre

Okay, so I've got 17x8 +38 wheels with 225/45 tyres. This catches on the VRX lip but clears the front bumper, and scrubs on the outer rear guards, but only by a few millimeters. There's barely any room inside the front wheel arches at full lock too. Your best option would be to find a 215/50 tyre which has the same circumference and then a wheel to match. Say 16x7 or 16x7.5 with offset between +46 and +38

Depends on what your long term (or short term?) plans are?

Are you going to lower your ES sometime soon or leave it standard height?

Like Sdate-42 said above, close to scrub town!

1/. safest bet would be a set of 17" x 7" or ( possibly a 7 1/2") wide rims with around 40p offset running 215/40 17 inch or 205/40 17 inch tires, that way you can lower it from 25mm - 75mm before you have any clearance issues...see this following link to this previous post, its about mag wheel sizes/tires for CH Lancer >> http://www.auslancer.com/index.php?threads/lancer-ch-wagon-questions.9907/#post-230011

If your staying at standard height just get the 17 x 7 (or 7.5?) with a 215/40 x 17 tire, 38-46P offset, as long as you stay within a 2.5% variance of your standard tire rolling diameter you will be fine, that way if you ever want to lower in the future, most stage 1 low springs are up to 30mm lower, so it will be fine.

As you said in the first post, you have an ES with "the stock 195 / 55 R15" tire ?
  • Your standard ES wheel/tire combo is a 195/55R15 withe 84V load rating and a rolling diameter of 595mm with offset 46p, this tire will fit a mag 5.5" to 7.0"
  • A 205/55 xR16 will have an overall diameter of 632mm and will fit from 5"-7.5" rim.
So what that means is with the 205/55 x 16 tires fitted on the recommended rim you will be doing 94.24 kph while your speedo reads 100 kph, you are kind-off in no mans land with a 16" rim, the closest you will get for best speedo accuracy is the VRX size of 195/55 R16, this will give you a reading of 95.91 kph at an actual 100 kph.

It wont look much diff to stock in terms tire width etc, as stated in the above posts a better bet is a 17" wheel (7" or 7.5" wide) rim, with stock suspension run a 215/40 x 17" tire, that will get it down to a 2.5% variance from stock size, will never foul your guards if not lowered, in which case switch to a 205/40 x 17" tire in the front, you just need to watch your positive offset if you go 7.5" instead of 7 ".

Yeah I have the stock 195 / 55 R15

The reason I'm looking at the 205's is because they're a lot cheaper than other sizes, for the specific tyre I want anyway, and I'd prefer the thicker rubber compared to the 17"'s. Also the 205's only have a diameter 11mm bigger than the stock VRX so I can't imagine they'd cause a problem scrubbing wise at least?

This I'm a bit confused about because when I compare my speedo to the GPS on my 15 inch wheels, the GPS tells me I'm doing 95km/h - 96km/h when my speedo is right on 100km/h, so how is it the VRX is the same if it uses 16 inch wheels?

I think wagonmaster's calculation was based on the current 195/55/R15 (stock) sitting on a perfect 100km/h, if the true reading on the stockies is 96kmph then you could safely run 205/50/16 which will bring your speedo up 3% so should read 100kmph when actual speed is 98-99kmph. Same with 205/45/R17 should read about 98-99kmph if your current reading from the stockies is as you say, 95-96kmph.

You have 2 options which will equate to solving all your issues.

1. Buy the correct tyre size to retain speedo accuracy, deal with the tyre cost or look at another tyre option.

2. Buy the larger tyre for cheaper and have an incorrect speedo, and then buy a speed correction kit and spend x amount of time trying to get that to work.

I would do #1. What tyre are you looking at?

RE003's

Assuming the VRX speedo is dead accurate with it's stock 16's, the 205 / 55 R16's would only underread by 2%, which I can live with.

I was lucky. Swapped from original 205 60 16 to 215 60 16 and speedo is spot on against GPS.

No its not an old car, rather, check was made when car was just over one year old, with 2,800km on the clock.
So! why did I change? Couldn't stand the noise of the original Yokohama's and wanted a softer ride.

Yes, CCTurbo is correct, the calculation was based on the current 195/55/R15 (stock) sitting on a perfect 100km/h and yes as CCTurbo stated you could safely run 205/50/16.

RE003 really aren't necessary unless you have power you need to control or do hill climbs etc. You could get Bridgestone MY02 or something for less with similar grip. No need to go all out.
