Engine Rattle/Ticking sound

Afternoon boys, having slight issues with my 06 lancer, 4G69 mivec model. once the engine starts up and warms up this really loud ass clicking/rattling sound starts. Checked a whole bunch off stuff including the exhaust manifold bolts, various heat shields, the timing belt, the other timing belt (the one where the chain would normally be) and even checked all the pulleys which we did find the idler pulley was rooted so we replaced it but still no luck. As i said it gets louder when the car gets warmer and increases when the revs increase and quites down quite a bit when the clutch is in while driving. If anyone has any ideas that'd be mint its actually driving me nuts.

cheers, Cameron

I worded that quite badly, the noise is extremely loud during idle already, bought the car three weeks ago and has been getting worse but hasn’t caused any mechanical faults. The sound increases while driving so putting the clutch in only cuts it down to the original idle volume which is still quite loud, I’ll try uploading a video.

Actually, I remember my Evo not sounding much better than that after an "aftermarket" timing belt kit was put in. He said it was gates, but both the belt and tensioner were noisy as.

Needs a timing belt tensioner. Just had the same thing on my missus 2.4L. She just used to turn the radio up. If you check the timing belt, you will likely find you can almost pull it straight off the cam gear. Mitsubishi dont sell a timing belt kit for this car, so the tensioner is often forgotten and this is the result.

Do not drive the car anymore than you have to, the oil pump/second balance shaft is the first thing to slip - the one I did was already out a tooth after less than 500kms since the noise was noticable.

You will find the noise is worst under load, which is why it may quieten down with clutch in. If youre in or near Sydney I can help you out getting a decent kit with everything you need to diy. You will also need the special mitsu tool to set the pre tension correctly on your new tensioner. Ill find the part number and upload it later, only about $20 from ebay.

Thanks heaps mate

hoooooly crap that isnt a good sound haha.

Trust in SDate's knowledge, hes the man for these cars

Took it to a mechanic friend yesterday he thinks the sound is coming from the valves and that they need to be manually adjusted or possibly the lifters, but id still like to try and rule out the belt and all of the pulleys.

Just pull the top timing cover off, 4x 10mm bolts and a few clips for the wiring. Theyre different size bolts, so mark where you pulled them off from.

Valve adjustment is easy enough on these, just buy a set of straight and a set of angle feeler gauges. Do the spark plug seals while youre there, they always leak. Adjustment must be done hot unfortunatley, so take if for a good half hour drive before you start.

A little note on this, make sure to get yourself a nice pair of lint-free gloves if you can (or white cotton), because touching and checking the rockers when the car is at temps melts the skin off your fingers lol. At least with gloves, you can fix them for longer, or at least with white/cotton ones see where your gloves have shedded fabric off when touching

Hi Camo what actually fixed your engine rattle, I have the same issue. Cheers CK

I'm chiming in too with the same issue. 2006 model. Mine only occurs when cold, but sounds the same as the video posted earlier. Will do some investigating with a listening device and see if I can track it down. Currently, all I can tell is that it's the left-hand side of the engine near the belts. Belt has decent tension, so I don't think it's the tensioner. Does a worn out idler gear made than noise when bearings are getting tired perhaps?
