DIY: Power window install!

Basically, you need the following parts. Without these, it will be difficult to complete:

Before doing anything confirm:
- That your loom has the spot for the relay, not all lancers/rages come with the loom in the dash for the power windows etc.
A good guide is if your car is a 2001 or older, generally speaking, you should have it there already.

If your missing the spot for the relay to plug in, you do not have the power windows dash loom at all and will need a whole MR or VRX dash loom to do the power windows install
This requires a lot more work like taking whole dash out, and may make the job more effort then its worth.

- Get door cards (only exception to the above)
- Get power window motor
- Get door looms
- Get window switches

My parts were off a VR-X Mirage. I believe a lancer should be the same.

Down to business:
1) The factory door loom has just two wires, + & - for the speaker in the door. Cars with Power Mirrors and Windows, will have i think 5 or 6 or so extra wires for the mirrors, and i think it was 7 for power windows. If a lancer has power windows, chances are it has power mirrors and central locking too.

The 4 wires uncut still are for the switch, and the blue/black and white/blue are for the speakers

The looms i got had window wiring, central locking, and power mirrors. Because i didnt want or need the mirrors, and already have the locking kit and speakers, i simply cut these wires off at the connections at the wreckers. Feel free to get the whole lot (its actually easier if you grab the whole lot, i didnt and had to resolder the OEM plugs/speaker connections back on)
Heres all the crap i cut off:

I paid $25ea door cards+ $50ea for the switches + $50 for the motor, so $250 all up in total. This is for genuine Parts too, so its designed to be plug and play.

2) When removing the parts from a wreck;
- take off the door card
- remove every bolt that you can see: a) two on the top & bottom of the motor wires, and three on the motor bit itself. b) unbolt the window, which is two screws (put window all the way up or down, and you'll see it).
This is my winder system, but its the same: Two bolts at the top, two at the bottom, and the three to the left, and the two window screws at the bottom on the white holder.

- You may need to remove your window to stop it falling to the bottom of the inside of the door (to remove the window, the black felt strip on the window edge just pops up and off).
- remove the door loom. This unplugs from everything in the door (just cut if it you'd like). This loom goes literally just inside the car body before coming to a plug. Unplug this, and you have your door loom!
This is on the drivers side, with the fusebox unbolted and lowered

3) Your car:
This is pretty much identical with the only exception being that your car will not have extra wires for the windows.
- remove your door card
-remove the metal bracket in the middle here:

- undo all the bolts for the manual winder system.

Stupid mechanical crap :p
- at this stage, i undid the power loom, and removed all wires except the power window related ones, and the audio wires.
It is really really hard to pass a 20pin plug through the rubber crap in the doors, so i cut and resoldered the plug once i pulled it through the rubber grommet.
-cut the power loom about 5cm from the doorside plug, and then tape these wires to the original door loom. Then you unplug your original door loom and pull it through from the car (i had to remove my ECU/glovebox / fusebox to reach this (slightly) easier). Resolder the new power loom up to its plug, and plug it back up to the interior loom.

- Remove the old window from the winder system (two bolts, either wind window 100% or 100% down, and you'll see the bolts. Then undo the 4 bolts holding half the winder (two at the top and 2 bottom), and the 3 bolts on the wider handle part.
You need to make sure you keep two wires for the speakers (unless your deaf/dont like music), here they are on the non power plug:

4) Plug all the connections back into where they go, one for each switch, each door loom if you havent already, and each window motor.
The one on the left is for the motor, and the right/white plug is the switch
dsc01959m.jpg

- You may need a relay in the center holder in the fusebox above the driver footwell. (I havent tested if its 100% needed or not at all).

Thats it pretty much, Feel free to PM me with questions, and its all still fresh to me lol

Oh, and enjoy not having to lean all the way over and wind the window like a crazy fool anymore!

The black door cards dont really stand out as much as they do in the pictures, they actually sorta blend in.

Anyway yeah :D

Great input Lilandonaki, I am sure loads of people will appreciate this.
If I were you I would still change the dash to a black one + the rest of the bits to black as well

Nice work! Man looks so weird a grey GLi interior with power windows.

Why didn't you take the power mirrors also? And the black dash off the VR-X if you could have?

I'll bet you're enjoying not having to reach over now tho, I know I do :p

I was considering getting everything black, but the doors sorta make everything seem better, and tbh i dont think i need it all black anymore.
I never adjust my mirrors, so i didnt want the mirrors lol :p

Power windows gives like 1000x better temperature adjustment in seconds haha

Do you know yet if the relay is needed in the footwell? and also is there anything else that needs to be put in like fuses? im just trying to get a check list of what to buy for the conversion as i have all the regs, switches, looms and im just worried that once i swap it all over to electric that the windows wont work at all and i dont want to be stuck without windows. Hopefully its just a easy swap

AFAIK with my power windows installation the fuse box should be somewhat similar, I'll verify this when I go back to my car for you. The relay box is essential (controls the switching and completes the circuit). If you're an unlucky sod like I have been with my P/W and you have a 'relay box' which has the blue plug on top of a white one (not beside the white), you may have to replace the dash loom. This is because the relay with the plug on top won't even have a place for the relay to be plugged in. Will take a pic of what I'm talking about aswell. You may have to replace the dash loom or do some hectic wiring otherwise, because without the relay box itself you'll not have the wires, and the wires are needed to power windows and the controls etc. I found this out the hard way.

From what i know, stockz car is a 2003 mirage, so everything should be there; Ill double check if that relay is needed or already there tonight for you stockz, and get back to you

Hey guys, i ended up ordering a relay from Mitsubishi and as soon as i put that into the footwell the windows got power. So now i have finished converting the windows it was pretty easy really. The only thing is i wish i had the door cards to go with the switches as it doesnt look too nice with the original manual door trims but it feels so nice now not having to move to get my windows down!

Hey donki, you need to put in the DIY this pre-note.before people do anything else even buy the parts read this

"before doing anything confirm that your loom has the spot for the relay, not all lancers/rages come with the loom in the dash for the power windows etc. if ur missing the spot for the relay to plug in, you do not have the pwr windows dash loom at all and will need a whole mr dash loom to do the pwr windows install, this requires a lot more work like taking whole dash out"

im planning on buying a 2001 MITSUBISHI LANCER CE2 LRX-1 GLI and was wondering if power windows could be installed??
ive got no car modding/ isntalling skills at all so i was gonna take it to some shop or something in melbourne! not sure where, but would be great to know a rough price range!

and do i have to buy parts myself or soemthing? :S

thanks!

With 99% of all car mods, if you have the money, it can be done ;)

Any halfwitted mechanic or auto electrician will definitely be able to do it, thats for sure, but i am not sure on the price.

I think i paid around $200 for the parts from a wreckers yard (i had to collect the parts myself), and i installed it myself too. I would expect a generic aftermarket window kit to be around $200-300+, then just add a couple hours for the Auto-elec to install it and whatnot i guess.

ive got a 2001 gli model.. if i was to look for the loom, what do i look for? :D i know it seems like a dumb question but ive got no idea on this stuff :p

If under your steering wheel you have a spot for the relay pictured then you have the right dash loom.
This means that you only need to swap the door looms. This has been covered many times.

DAMMIT... :( only have the 3 boxes of 2 White and Blue :( unless im seeing it wrong i dont think i have the loom :( poor me

Yep you need to either change your loom or wire them in, your loom does not include the wiring for power windows.
As a general rule of thumb and in most cases (MR's aside) 98 model and onwards mirage/lancer will have it

Don't worry about the boxes, I didn't.
When you look at your current door loom that runs wires to your door speakers, follow it back into the footwell cavity in the car, pull it through, either into the car or push it out the other side. My connector on the inside had more wires than the connector running back in to the door. Mines a 2001 as well, so it should work just like mine did.
