DIY: Interior Carbon Fibre Wrap-up incl. removal process

So I still have a bit of CF wrap leftover so I am thinking of wrapping the AC/radio surround and/or the lower cubby area. Aesthetically I'm not sure if it will fit in. Any thoughts?
This is the area marked in red:

I have the vrx model and the dash is already got carbon fibre wrap from factory I assume ?

I haven't been able to find a wrap to match the one that's already on the dash? Has anyone had much luck with matching it?

I don't think its carbon fibre wrap. I've seen it and it does look very similar to carbon fibre.

Yeah I can't find anything that will match it. I guess I'll just get one that's close off eBay and if its close do it if not ill re do the dash.

Did you end up doing anymore on your car? Like around the ac controls ?

Yeah best bet is eBay. For a change you can get the glossy CF vinyl wrap instead of the plain CF. I was thinking about this but I cbf anymore after having done the dash like 4-5 times and power windows etc. to get them look like its from factory.

AC Controls...No not yet. That's probably the last bit of CF wrapping left to do on the interior. I'm still contemplating whether to do a double DIN conversion or not, thus the delay. I don't like how the standard CH only has a single DIN so any flip-down/up DVD screen you get will either block the AC controls or the hazard light switch.... :(

VRX has double DIN from factory right?

Yeah ill just be inclined to get the best looking cheap wrap everything I do is in a budget but done well none the less.

I'm not too sure about the DIN mine is single but I'm pretty sure it's the evos that had the double din. I've thought about trying the conversion one day also.

So I tried to wrap my gear shifter surround/centre but I have a manual and found it near impossible to wrap and have failed miserably, it's heaps harder than it looks to wrap. Does anyone know if the silver ring comes off.

Take the shift console out and look underneath I'd say it would being the gear boot is prolly tucked inside/between

Manual should be easier to wrap lol. It has less curves near the shifter area. Of course you need to remove the surround first.

I got it done in the end I just cut a hole out of the wrap to slip it over the surround as I couldn't find anyway to take it off.

It's not perfect but its good enough to stay like it is till I have time to do it again

Looks good. That part you wrapped can be separated from the bottom half. Just pry it open with a flat head screwdriver. That center surround stays on I think, just pry it open and you'll find out. I'll take a pic of how mine removes

I dunno if anybody else has tried it, but I managed to wrap the AC control/head unit panel. It was VERY difficult, and required a lot of heating up and smoothing out. Took about an hour to do the one panel. And then the result wasn't perfect, there were still a couple of small bumps/folds (not noticeable when in the car, unless you know where to look). As for the rings where the control dials are, I just heated it up and cut out a circle along the dip, then heated it again to smooth it out.

Hi mate, nice work there. I was wondering if you removed the top panel with the vents before wrapping it. I've got a ch vrx with the fake carbon fibre which scratches very easily and want to re-do it with longer lasting stuff. The exploded view in the manual shows a ce I think and looked like you need to remove the section under it to get at the screws. Thanks

Mate that's a Stella job. Looks mint. What wrap did you use. I tried one off eBay but it was crap. Wasn't very sticky.

i highly recommend spending the little bit extra and getting the genuine 3M stuff,
iv played around with several different types from ebay, and 3M wraps are far above the rest, but you may find when working on small parts or moderatly complex edges that you will still need to use something like kwik grip for that extra hold

I used the stuff from ebay :troll:

It is pretty crap, but it gets the desired result. Like I said, it took a LOT of heating up and smoothing out to get it looking like that, and as for the dials I just cut the circles using a craft knife, then peeled it out, reheated and tucked in the edges around the ring.

The heating of the wrap melted the adhesive somewhat and helped it grip pretty well.

Can't wait to try some bits on my car, I noticed you didn't bother buying a DIY kit off eBay, is it needed?
Also some say use water but other say no.

Have you trying any exterior work, like a bonnet?

Is it good to try on a small item first, something you can easily replace if you screw up?

I got some 3M 3D stuff off eBay which should look good when I get off my butt to start the work.

So many questions...

I simply bought the wrap and cut it to shape, then using a heat source put it on the desired panel (removed prior to wrapping) then smooth it out with heat. I never heard of anyone trying water

Definitely try a small item first so you can get a feel for how the wrap works

As for exterior work, I have not tried it
