Brake Upgrade Information

Unlucky dutch. If your in WA hit me up and i can give a hand.

I have had a search but cant find any concrete answers and hoped you guys would have an answer:

Has anybody completed a brake upgrade using the 3000gt/gto brakes? The 4 piston fronts and 2 rears? I know its kind of overkill but i did come across somewhere on a forum in europe that a couple of people had done it. Any thoughts or info on this guys?

Ok found some info on sizes for the USDM. Looking for caliper bolt spacing now...

*Slowly satisfying my curiosity. Looks like the park brake is cable and runs shoes inside the hats. Still trying to decipher the US market models to what we have here. A link i found interesting:

http://www.galanttuners.com/index.php?/topic/800-evo-brembo-vs-3kgt-vr4-caliper-comparison/

I think the GTO brakes are the same as the VR4-prefacelift 294mm setup, in which case there is a couple of people running them/the equivalent 294mm caliper/rotor setup: @sidewayz in vic, i think @MOR31 or @unclepaulie in QLD, and @Trondabron are running 294mm's

From what i have gathered so far there is 2 versions of the 3kgt brakes. I wonder if its possible to do the entire car with 4pot fronts and 2 pot rears with what im guessing is a custom park brake setup...

Hope they can chime in :) the parts required seem really cheap too but im not sure how readily available they would be in our neck of the woods

Well have found out more info! Calipers do fit, at least the front ones do, but a bracket must be fabbed up.

Still trawling for any info on anything regarding upgrading the rears... stay tuned.

*Had a brain fart and remembered that nissan r33s had sumitomo calipers and were basically identical to the mitsu ones however the mounting bolts were slightly different. Actually all skylines from the 32 onwards were sumis apart from the brembos... again stay tuned

**well *poo*... that blows that out of the water. From what i have read the nissan sumitomos are 100m bolt spacing though im upgrading an s15 with 33gtr brakes this weekend so will get some sizes then.

I'm quite sure there are already some brackets that accommodate the GTO brakes as I've seen some people run them on FTOs

Yeah i found a link to some mirage forums that had some made up the real challenge is going to see whats required to get the 3KGT rear brakes to work...

FYI - I have a set of near new 294mm front and matching slotted rotors and calipers with EBC redstuffs off an Evo 4 floating around if anybody is interested.
Also, i did a quick skim back through but quick question.
Currently have proton disc rear, 276mm evo 3 front and evo4 booster an 1" BMC. Im thinking of stepping down from the 276mm to the 256mm. Whats it like with the evo booster/BMC? Or should i keep it as the stock piddly drum rear version?

For what its worth, im still running stock booster/BMC with 276mm fronts and 260mm disc rears, i have zero issues with pedal feel or travel, @Hugh-CE can vouch for that

As am I for a few years now. I even passed engineering with it.

But donks also has braided lines all around for pedal feel goodness. Does stop on a dime though. I have a 1" BMC and I can't really tell the difference in pedal feel for donki and my car, having driven both quite a lot.

^ also the 256 can be harder to come by, atm I have single piston magnas cause I'm too lazy to put the evo brakes on I have to match the pretty and new brake gear I bought, but the single pistons do have a smaller profile and different shape pad. While being bigger than the 256 and more readily available for us in VIC. At least in my area I never find wrecked protons.

You're welcome to have a measure of mine or test fit whatever if you want.

Just trying to find some details and measurements of the 3KGT calipers just for reference.

What does everyone have planned for today?

Cheers man! I thought all the 1.8 lancers came with the 256mm gear? If its only the protons then probably wont be that easy to come across - although there are a few around for wrecking.

Magna 4cyls have 256mm discs and calipers. Just gotta buy proton rotors to suit the stud pattern

I believe CC GSRs also had the 256mm brakes. Might be easy to find on 4gtuner as most would've done a 276mm upgrade

  • Mitsubishi Magna TR or TS V6 model:
-NON-ABS model (Single Piston): bolt up
-ABS model (Twin Piston): bolt up, however requires 4mm to be shaved off the banjo-bolt to fit.
    **Paired with:**
  • Mini Cooper S Rotors (276mm) DBA 542
Has anyone actually done this? Or is this just in "theory"? Because I just went and bought all this sh!t and it dont Fit!!
The rotors are too big and the bolts dont line up with the calipers.
F#*kn glad I wasted $500 bucks on all that sh!t!!!

1. Do you have a 4x100 stud pattern. The only reason you would buy a mini cooper s rotor.
2. Maybe you have a different hub?

Also this isnt theory. I literally did the brake upgrade yesterday. Sure not the same rotor but it's the same studded pattern as the Cooper s redrilled

A few people have, check the bolt spacing of the caliper and on the hub, they should be the same at 129mm if thats what you mean in that they dont bolt up?
And the rotors should measure 276mm across and be 4x100. What exactly isnt working properly?

I did exactly that, worked fine.
TS magna front single piston calipers and Mini Cooper 276mm rotors.
