About to enter the Evo world (8 vs 8 MR)

Hi guys,

I'm about to embark on an adventure to the dark side, I have had two WRX's and an S15 since I got my licence and looking to get into an Evo 8/Evo 8 MR.

I'm fairly early into the process of looking but trying to decipher the difference's between the ADM and JDM Evo 8 and then the MR and what would be the best route to go, I have a decent understanding but far from an expert.

I know the MR has a lot of extra's, but most of the gear (wheels, suspension, turbo etc.) I will upgrade anyway, so my biggest question is what would the best base be, I would like to go MR just so I've got one but is it worth it if most of the stuff will be changed out for aftermarket anyway?

Hopefully I can get involved in the community and get some clarity from you guys also.

Cheers,
Jet

adm and jdm differences are as below
adm has 190kw instead of 206kw the jdm has
different recaros on the adm, the seat base has a wider area, jdm recaros are tighter
adm has no folding mirrors
adm 8 has no climate control
adm has no rear wiper
adm has no HID headlights and no fog lights either but has a rear fog light
adm has the antilag components removed (not that you would use it on street anyways lol)
but adm8 has super ayc found in 8mr and 9

8 mr vs 8 gsr
8mr has diff cams
slightly larger turbo exhaust housing
alcantara recaro
bbs wheels with bilsteins (if not swapped out alread)
sayc
aluminium roof
blacked out taillights and headlights

i think thats about it. might have missed a few

cannot stress how important to get a japanese history check on it before you buy, not so much for rewound kms but more for car grade. you dont want a grade R with low kms.

Ah yeah so pretty much what I had already discovered about the MR, didn't realise that about the ADM/JDM stuff, I'll be changing cams, turbo, wheels, suspension etc. so yeah I'm starting to think the plain Evo 8 be better for me.

Do all 8's have a 6 speed box? That is one of the main things I wanna know, I've seen some with 5 speeds and some with 6's, is this a common conversion (5 speed stronger than 6) or is it an Adm/JDM thing?

ahhh yes the gearbox.
completely forgot about that
adm 8 has the stronger 5 spd box.

jdm 8 and 8mr came with the 6spd box.
many chasing high power have switched the 6 for a 5

maybe consider a 7 and the facelift it to a 9
i went with this route somewhat. 8gsr with a full 9 kit

If you're going to mod it, especially heavily, get the 8.

If you're going to keep it original and collect it, get the 8 MR.

There’s a few other differences that haven’t been listed. Probably a bit late to the party but anyway here goes. The MR has redesigned ringland dimensions and uses chrome nitride piston rings, the drivers doors are lighter due to the use of aluminium side intrusion bars. Also worth noting the 8 over the 7 uses beehive springs from the factory and the MR cams are 260 degree up from 248 in the GSR with increased lift so are equivalent to many aftermarket 260 cams. Another interesting point to note as well is that the bottom end assembly is identical between the 8 and 9 with the only engine difference being the addition of MIVEC to the head not including ancillaries ie. turbo.
