Has anyone fitted 215 60 16 tyres to a ES CJ? What are the ramifications legally and warranty wise.
Also ride, handling and clearance issues if any. Increase to tyre depth will be 6mm. Times 2 equals 12mm
to overall tyre size. Alteration to speedo I believe is around 1+ kph at 100kph

Increase in ground clearance will be a bonus to me, give clearance to most roadside and car park curbs in my area.

Thought of fitting 205 65 16 tyres to improve ride comfort with perhaps slight loss to handling sharpness
but this increases overall tyre size 205 mm raising too many issues including weight distribution and more.

PS. Will contact Mitsubishi re warranty .

I don't think it will impact warranty at all. Your warranty is only voided if the item you changed caused the item you want 'warrantied' (fixed or replaced) to under perform or break. One size up tyres will not affect this

The "improved ground clearance" is about the same as pumping up your tyres to the correct pressures.

Always keep tyres at specified pressure. 215 60 tyre at equal pressure has 6mm greater ground clearance to 205 60 tyre.

Always keep tyre pressure at specified pressure. Checked regularly. 215 60 tyre has 6mm greater ground clearance than 205 60 tyre.

I believe falls within legal limits in Victoria

One could also loose around 15kg to gain that 6mm of clearance in the way of lesser load on/in the vehicle. This is such a tiny difference in height it would not matter for anything i can think of - speedhumps can vary in height from 5mm to 110mm. Maybe for an improvement in grip?

Still maintain all things being equal 6mm difference. As it will be. Extra clearance needed is minimal and would be sufficient to clear curbs in my area when angle or right angle parking,
save bottom of front of car from contacting concrete but only one of the issues

Coming from a country and 4x4 background I guarantee you will not notice 6mm difference. Maybe you can clear a larger leaf than usual thats about it. Grab a ruler, go outside and check it. Its legit nothing.

Change to brand new springs and you'll probably get more clearance.

Sprigs are brand new travelled only 3,000km since new, all on good? made roads. Must have thick or wrinkly leaves up your way Ha Ha.
Will let you know the outcome good or bad if I finish up with 215 tires. I'm looking more for ride comfort, quieter ride than existing Yokoharma A 460
plus more rubber on the road won't hurt.

The tyre shop should have a manual that will detail what size tyres they can fit to your size of rim.

I would not go and replace your current tyres merely for a change in size though. Only do it if you are replacing worn out tyres or chasing a quieter tyre...

I think the manual Ryan is talking about is called an NJOY universal tire fitment guide, thats what most tyre places use in conjunction with another online version as well. I have the NJOY manual and i have access to an online version. If you can tell me
  • what is the standard size wheel & tire for your car peregine?
  • what is the load rating as per door placard, be something like 84W ???
  • what size are you thinking of putting on?
not quite sure what you want to do, if you want to remain legal for insurance purposes you are limited by two factors

( i assume we are talking about standard factory wheels)?
  1. The info on the tire sizing/load rating sticker usually on inside door pillar
  2. QLD transport specifications guide

Ok, limited by
  1. The info on the tire sizing/load rating sticker usually on inside door pillar
  2. Vic transport specs re wheel/tire modifications or whatever other state both mentally and physically you may be in. :sunglasses:

Hi wagonmaster, car is my15 ES Sport everything stock standard. tires have only done 3000km. and are Yokohama Advan A 460 205 60 R 16 92H. rim width 6.5 inches so are OK for 215 60 16 tires.

Intend fitting Bridgestone Turanza Serenity Plus tires. Reason for change, current tires are too noisy. Wear factor, handling, everything else great. Size to 215 ride comfort. 6mm extra ground clearance may sound a waste of time but will matter to me.
Anyone interested in these low KM unscuffed tires make me an offer to consider. Advertised below with pics: at Trading Post

Peregrine, i see you have done your research and homework on this one.

I guess the main reason why you are getting rid of these OEM tires as they may be a little noisy on the highway ?

Not sure how much quieter the new turanzas will be, some reviews say yes / others no if you believe them, but do let us know as the specs are really good on them.
  • 12mm overall dia increase (6mm x 2) so overall sidewall height will increase 6mm
  • speedo error will be about 1.84 kph, so at 100 kph speedo will show 101.84 kph, again subject to tire pressure/load capacity, so really bugger all.
  • the 215/60 . 16 nominal rim size fitment is 6" to 7", so once again your 6.5 inch rims are perfect as its center of range
  • the load rating will increase from 92 to 95, which as we all know the higher the load rating the rougher the ride, but this is subject to construction of tire sidewall / air pressure etc so the extra 6mm you gain in height may not make it ride any better as the load rating is higher, but you will gain 6mm height subject to correct air pressure being maintained.
  • the nominal sectional width of tire (sidewall to sidewall) increases from 209mm to 221mm, so an extra 12mm (6mm either side tire center line), this wont include your actual tread width as the tread does not go all the way down the sidewalls, but it should be a bit more tread on the road which should make for a marginal improvement on handling.
To cut a long story short, yes they are legal in vic / shouldn't make any difference to mitsi warranty / should handle better / will ride a bit higher / ride quality may not be too much different from your current tires due to higher load rating.................... that's it thats all i've got.........................

I've posted this elseware but here goes. Traded in noisy, hardly used Yokoharma tyres to dealer for a song. Fitted Bridgestone Turanza Serenity Plus 215 60 16 tyres. Oh and 215 to 205 $40 cheaper each.
Wow what a difference. From go cart to limo, well maybe not that much!! but the difference is huge. Can now hold conversations in a bit above a whisper at 120kph
Added unexpected benefit, sounds improbable for such a small (6mm) difference in radius but fills wheel arch more, to a point that appearance is improved noticeably.
Now think I realize one reason why Mitsu: use noisy tyres. Hides occasional rattles and squeaks which would be time consuming to fix under warranty complaints.
No complaints happy customer? Tyres will take most customers passed warranty period!

I've literally read your review on this 4/5 times in different places.
Please consolidate in a singular thread rather than update 10 different threads. It just clutters everything up

Could not edit answer so here is the reason the increase in size fills the wheel wells improves appearance
