RPW Stage 1 ECU Flash Tune

Okay guys, for those lurking and thinking about getting David's (RPW) Stage 1 ECU Flash Tune, here is the skinny....

I finally had the time and inclination to do this.... I had been given this tune by David, when I bought an air filter and exhaust from RPW, quite some time ago.

Now that my twin exhaust, larger RA inlet, K&N and headers are on, it was time to take stock of what the car was doing.

The stock map had allowed the car to become quite rich and any power increase seems to have been developed purely from additional fuel, to match the airflow increase.

The only problem was the instantaneous fuel usage readout had blown out! To nearly 11.6ltr/100km..!!

The tune was inserted via the Tactrix 2.0 Open ECU cable and ECU Flash program. It takes only minutes and I have the OEM/stock ECU Flash saved to my drive.

Immediately, I noticed a smoothness in the idle, a much lower tone to the exhaust and the fact that it was much, much quieter...

On the road, power-runs were conducted using G Tac Pro and Dynolicious programs on the iPhone. GTP uses both accelerometers and GPS to measure the runs; in all parameters, such as 0-100kph, 1/8th and 1/4 mile times....

The car felt slower, but looking at the results, it was actually just smoother and a little faster. I managed to improve my overall 1/8th mile time by 0.2 sec (not massive) and my G-loading by also 0.2g.

The big surprise was the immediate reduction in fuel usage figures from the instant readout, by over 2ltr/100km from my poor aforementioned figure. Today saw this number creep back below 9ltr/100km for the first time in ages.. These are city figures and I am confident of even better numbers on a long run to Brisbane from Toowoomba, keep you all posted.

In speaking with Ryan, I am happy to assist members with CJ Lancers, to input RPW flash tunes, if you purchase via that company. I can both get your stock ROM Flash out, assist you to send away and reinstall the returned Stage 1 map, once David at RPW has modified one for you.

I cannot obviously offer you any dyno tuning or modification of the map. I will not give away my map or insert maps that are nefariously obtained. My assistance to club members will be given free of charge (in case any lurking CCJ watchers are still calling me a 'thief', 'liar', or other such venacular), because I believe in the benefits of reciprocation.

For those away from Toowoomba, it will just have to be on an opportunistic basis, because I cannot be everywhere, all the time.

I am sure Ryan will let us know if any other ground-rules are required here.

Final note, I would suggest that this is an inexpensive and worthwhile modification, which enhances other power-increasing mods, especially those who may have started helping the car breath easier.

Just wondering, Does the car have to be in the RPW workshop to get this done, or is it something able to be shipped/done in sydney?

Is this still being offered? I have a ZH outlander with a 4B12 that's wanted to have reflashed... No mods as of yet but my fuel economy is sitting at about 13lt/100.

Thanks

Ouch thats thirsty. Not sure if they still offer it or not but if you are NSW based I recommend getting Merlin to do a road tune on your car instead. Only around the $300 mark but has better results.

Merlin hasnt tuned a 4B12 yet, that means I will need to develop an xml for the ROM

As there is no on-line CJ ROM repository, he would like to get a copy of the ROM before tune day so he can build the definition xml

I know this coz i asked about my mates VRX :)

Ahh ok, can't too be far off from a 4B11 though. I actually have a ROM and XML for a MY10 4B12....send me Merlin's email address.

so does anyone have Merlin's contact details? i'm thinking of getting a tune from him myself for the 4B12 if he's got one going now...

Can someone send me Merlins contact info, I have a 4b11 and recently got a catback put on and have had a large increase in economy ~10L/100 and a noticeable drop in low end torque>
Hoping a ECU remap could atleast help with the economy

ECU tuning. Who in Melbourne does it? does it in any way affect your warranty, cant see that it should if done correctly and what is the cost, with or without dyno.

It will effect your warranty
Thanks Hugh, but why if it is performed by a certified A grade mechanic . Couldn't this be constituted as part of a service which can't be ruled against.

Stretching things a bit HU?

Yep. It would void everything that the ECU controls. As far as Mitsubishi is concerned the ECU is perfectly engineered to run your car. It has been designed to keep everything at a point where they can guarantee its safety and longevity.

I say void the warranty and get tuning ;)

Put it this way: if a Grade-A Mechanic, certified in every car, every engine whatever, or some other perfect-being installs a super aggressive tune on the car, and the engine happens to go bang i dont think Mitsubishi would go, "ah, not a problem, thats our fault for not making sure it will be suitable"

A warranty is a guarentee on the goods working (within reason), in the condition they are, for a fixed amount of time. Its the manufacturer saying, "your car will operate for xxx amount of time, if you drive it how what would be considered normal/the same as the majority of population, in a normal operating enviroment", not in any which-way you fancy or drive with the aim of pushing it to the absolute limits.

The owners handbook should have this all detailed in the back anyway, what is normal warranty conditions and whatnot, to some degree

Yup if you tune your car you may have warranty issues but it will only invalidate the warranty on anything that is directly caused by the ECU tune.

For example if the engine leans out and craps itself you will be liable. If your mass air flow sensor dies then Mitsubishi are still responsible to replace it (if they find out the car is modded they may try argue about it though).

As for a reliable tuner in Melbourne I have no idea. There used to be a guy (Merlin) doing them just north of Sydney... So maybe you could go on a holiday of you are that keen on it!!

Thanks chaps will see if dealer can tune it and keep it under warranty, maybe fit a lower back pressure 2.5 inch muffler too, possibly cost a mint but if it keeps warranty in place!!! . I feel all the detailed explanations and helpful hints may also come in handy for others too.

I'm going to put money on the dealer not being able to tune the car (other than flashing a stock ROM back onto the ECU)....

Merlin Tuning is still going well, done a number of 4b11/12 NA lancer as well as turbo vehicles as well

Bumblebee why do you keep necromancing old threads? The original post is over 10 years old, and the most recent post over 3 years old.

We know you're a big advocate of Merlin's tunes, but you're bordering on advertising which is against forum rules for non-sponsors.
