CC LANCER AUTO COUPE AIR CON HELP QUESTION ?

Hi

I need some help with the daughters 1.5lt 95 CC auto coupe, it has a problem with the air con, i'll try and explain it below:
  • After market air fitted in 95 (it has the 2 position economy/normal a/c on/off switch)
  • car does not overheat, temp stays at 1/2 mark on gauge even sitting in traffic in 40 degree heat.
  • air con works ok but seems to not cool down as much when in traffic/stopped at lights etc.
  • when we get going again or highway driving its fine, once we hit traffic again it doesn't cool down and gets warmer.
  • I figured it must have something to do with the airflow over the front condenser as when i first drive off its fine, when i slow in traffic/red lights it doesn't cool down as much, once underway again on highway or travelling over 50 klm's per hr its all good again.
  • I checked under the bonnet at diff times and found only one of the thermo fans was working at anytime (the small one runs pretty well at the time) and the big one never seems to fire up, i'm not sure if that could be the cause of no airflow thru the condenser in traffic/idling ??
My question is which fan should come on for the a/c when i switch it on (i thought small one) but the small one seems too run all of the time regardless, and when should the larger fan come on (i gather it has a temp sensor switch which activates the fan at a preset temp (not sure of its location)

Any explanation/ help from anyone to give me some advice on how these fans are suppose to work? Is it a relay / fuse (location?) which is suppose to come on when a/c switched on and which fans are a/c or cooling activated?

Cheers

In my 1.8, the smaller fan comes on with the A/C and the big one comes on to keep the temp down (thermo fan). When I was running a GSR ECU the thermo fan didn't kick on at all, had to install an aftermarket thermo switch. Perhaps that's what you need to solve it.

Thanks Rigby

You are right, checked the smaller fan today and it only comes on when a/c is switched on an the compressor is cycling, we let it idle for 15 mins with the a/c on after going for a quick drive, gauge was rock steady at 1/2 way mark but still the big fan did not come on ?
  • Is the big fan suppose to be running all the time?
  • Does it only come on when sensor switch detects certain temp?
If the sensor is faulty (as it may be) i think it should have come on today (40 degrees @ 12md when we went for a drive) checked both relays all seem ok, maybe your answer of just wiring it up to an adjustable thermostat switch/sensor is the easiest and simplest solution ?

Cheers

From memory it only comes on when it hits the appropriate temp, an aftermarket thermo switch lets you adjust from very low to very high, I keep mine turned just below halfway. With an aftermarket one, you shove the sensor in the top rad hose and seal it up real good, then when that sensor get to a certain temp it triggers the thermo fan on. Can take pics of my setup if you want. It cost approx $60. Takes an hour or two to install and test.

Thanks

I'ts not coming on unless preset temp is way up there above 180 degrees, so i think i'll go rigby's idea !

I go your route with the adjustable thermostat (the K.I.S.S) principle, as we need the extra airflow for the a/c to function ok in traffic, whereabouts did you get the thermo switch from (ebay?) and yes if you have some pics that would be great!

Cheers
