REDUCING NOISE

Just joined. Bought a brand new CJ ES Sport three months ago. Past cars have been upmarket types in keeping with business needs. Now retired and enjoying this little bundle of fun. Only gripe (little one) its noisy, Yokohama tires, wind noise and engine noises. Lucky! All I have to do is remove my hearing aids HA HA. Seriously though I am in the process of sound deadening. Have found products from Clark Rubber terrific and cheap. So far have completed boot now closes with a thud not a tinny clank. Under bonnet, due to limited clearance used deadening in cavities between bracing and refitted original back in place makes it heavy to lift for an old guy but OK. Also used spray on deadener, under body. Wheel archers are next. Then the doors and interior floor and firewall. Roof? Have bought a decibel meter yesterday and will monitor results. So far noticeable difference in noise reduction. engine, road and (wind, shhhhh how did that happen) Current readings. Idle=39db, at 50 kph==54db, at 80 kph=62db, at100 kph=66db. Noticeable difference to what it was.
only 3 months old and 1,200 plus ks on the speedo, rear ended by truck. Will continue when repaired and will post materials used etc: pictures? if possible.The first part of this is listed in INTRODUCTIONS also.
 
The 18" Yokos were damn noisy on my car, switching tyres made a huge improvement.

I started putting Dynamat on the inside of my doors and then glued a high density closed cell foam over it. This seemed to help. I also did this around the areas of the rear wheel arches. I didn't have the motivation to go any further ripping up the interior to get access for putting deadeners in.
 
Interesting - do you mind linking what Clark Rubber products you have used? I have just picked up an 2005 Wagon and there are a few areas for improvement sound wise :)

And a bummer about the rear ender!

Hi Ryan I haven't touched my doors yet but have done rear wheel arches and also at the same time covered the boot floor, wheel well, rear mudguards,(rear quarter panels?) Be careful not to block air flow opening ,also under boot lid. Generally used suitable patch of rubber sheet and foam over the top to stop vibration and absorb sound. Silencing the boot made a marked difference to reducing sound levels and lid closes with a thud not a tinny clank. Intend doing the underneath, external parts of the wheel arches next.

Hi Bassmaniac69 Haven't got that info at the present but hope to obtain same on next trip to Clark Rubber.Will keep you posted. Basically I have used rubber patches a cupple of MM thick of what I felt were of adequate size to quell vibration and foam or aluminum backed foam to absorb any airborne noise. Cant really quantify it but felt I cut engine noise by placing pieces akin to and of the same size, just a few centimeters long in the gaps either side of the seal at the back of the hood just in front of the windscreen. Stops engine noise coming through windscreen? Intend doing the same along either side of the engine bay under the hood, for about 20-25 CM to see if that works . You might like to try that, use double sided tape to attach, can easily be removed if it doesn't work and costs very little to do !
 
Had my MY09 VRX for over 6 months now and not really noticed the noise but my back seat passengers have had some complaints when trying to talk at highway speeds. Being over 5 years old it's not running the original Yokos its now on more affordable tires from Kumho. Been considering some sound deadening when I can afford it but not sure where to start or install it, I'd probably put some in the doors and boot first when I know where.

Any DIY guides here on this?

Sorry to hear about the truck, maybe it's time for a RA bumper with twin pipes out the back?

Hi, haven't done doors yet so cant help try Club CJ. Regarding boot, remove all lining material, carpets etc: Under lid, side walls, spare from wheel well. I vertually covered the boot floor, wheel well and wheel arches and then used patches, in cavities of under lid and mudguards. All glued with spray on glue from Clark Rubber. then glue foam into those areas. Packed some foam into areas I couldn't reach such as, between wheel arches and mud guards. and oh, don't forget under back seat. Rubber used was Clark Rubber Insertion rubber, 1.5mm thick, 300mm width, 1ply, pt no SGINSS15300. Spray under body with a couple of good cotes of sound deadener. Hope that helps! Get my car back today.

The only thing that is stopping me with sound deadening is that it makes the car weigh even more which I just don't need. Found alternatives that are actually lightweight?
 
Hi Rigby sounds like your lucky, have a car that satisfies your every current need and that you have done wonders to it. Mine while as is is fine, like playing with it to gain more silence don't see any worries with extra 10 kilos or so. Will still hit 120kph maximum allowed speed in areas I travel at an acceptable pace with a lot less noise. Perhaps tiny bit of extra fuel!
 
Got car back from panel beaters but goes back next Monday for a couple of touch ups on parts, not up to new car standard. Will continue with deadening when I get it back.

Hi Bassmaniac69. Sorry for late reply. Many things got in the way. Materials used from Clark Rubber :- Formshield = (1) Aluminum backed by foam 10mm. (Also used 5mm unfortunately not available anymore?) (2)Peeled foam acoustic grey 12mm. (3)PE30 PE closed cell foam BLUE 3mm. (Also denser foam green backing no longer available?) (3) Rubber:- Insertion Rubber 1.5mm thick width 300mm 1 ply sold by the meter. used mainly to stop vibration patch on metal panels and on boot floor (4) Spray glue Clark Rubber and Autobahn. Just came across spray glue from Clark Rubber apparently superior and dearer, able to withstand higher heat and will glue anything even concrete bought a can, haven't used it yet. Seems the way to go? Acoustic foam is much denser and heaps dearer, stops noise penetration better than open cell foam but open cell absorbs sound better.

Dramatic reduction in noise. Had only travelled 3000km in lancer ES Sport my15 on original Yokohama Advan A-460 tires, couldn't stand the din any longer..

Turfed them at a nominal price to tire dealer and replaced with Bridgestone Turanza Serenity plus tires, 215 60 16 instead of standard 205 60 16 main reason for size change,
$40 less for each tire plus buy three get fourth one free. Plus looks better, rides better, bit more rubber on the road. and WOW!!!! heeeeaps Quieter! What a difference.

Clearances, legality Vic: and warranty issues on my checks appear to be OK. Speedo out by about 1.85kph at 100kph. Speedos can be out by more than that.
Will check both on GPS. I believe they are 100 percent accurate, when I find mine or buy a new one.

I've been doing a fair bit of sound deadening and this is a quantum leap forward.
